Deli Grotto

Post by StJohnbum »

Where exactly is the Deli Grotto located. I'm pretty sure it is on the Coral Bay side. Thanks

Big Belly Deli was in Coral Bay but closed... do not know if it reopened.

Thanks Iprof. I haven't seen a deli on this side so I think you are correct that it has not reopened.

Deli Grotto is also a cash only place. So make sure you bring cash! They have really amazing bread that they bake and sell by the loaf, sliced or unsliced.

Big Belly was in the plaza with Lily's and Aqua Bistro. Not sure if anything else went in there but I don't think so.

There is something else up there now, maybe where Big Fish was, but I can't remember what it was. I think it was food oriented but I am not 100% sure. It looked sparse.

When did Big Belly close? It was doing a pretty good pizza business when we were there in November.

Maybe Pia can fill us in on the situation about Big Belly Deli and whether or not it's still a going business. We loved their pizza too and hope it's still there when we're on-island in May.

My comment that the Big Belly Deli had closed was based on this post by "Carolyn"

"Cross Big Belly Deli off the lunch list in Coral BAy. We stopped for sandwiches on Tuesday and he told us he was closing in 8 days...packing up his stuff and leaving St John. When I asked how business was he said it was off 40% from last year and last year was off 40% from the year before...he also pretty much told us he can't give that business away. Too bad...our wraps he made were delish on the beach that day."

and the business is still for sale.

I hope that Pia or another Coral Bay resident can give us an update... we always enjoyed at least one lunch at the Big Belly and did so in October 2009.

Yes, Big Belly closed, and the deli that replaces it reopened in the same space earlier this month -- can't remember the name at the moment, but they're there and doing business. You can also get the sandwich du jour next door at Full Moon Cafe.

Thanks catbat; good to have another "local" here with the answer. So, the Big Belly Deli (as a business) has been sold?

I believe it sold, as all the fixtures, etc. from Big Belly are in the new place. But I can't confirm that the transfer was as straightforward as that seems.

The coffee at Deli Grotto is good, bagels are good, and sandwiches are good. Opens at 8am I recall.
