My 89 yr old Mom suffered a spontaneous femur fracture when standing up from being seated on a sofa. The nurses in the ER said it was from taking a famous brand biphosphonate osteoporosis medication that she has been on for at least ten years. I researched this and the articles said meds usually help for the first few years but after that they can be detrimental. Be careful with these medications!
Sorry to hear about your mom. Very interesting about the results of your research. My mom fell down the steps at the age of 79 and broke her hip but she wasn't on any osteoporosis meds. At the time I remember wondering if she should have been.
Ive read alot about this lately. Fosamax has been implicated in a number of spontaneous fractures when used for more than 5 years. Something about inhibiting the body's natural bone replenishment.
