New parking lot and facilities at big Maho
Sox, why, why, why must you always go after me? I'm so tired of not being able to post any of my opinions or comments without you having something mean to say back to me. I quit reading Terry's thread on the OT forum when you went after me over there, now I can't post my opinions here without you doing it again!
YOU KNOW I said I wasn't aiming my comments at anyone! Yet you say you say you resent what I said. Well too effing bad! I wasn't talking to you! You have completely ruined this forum for me.
Sorry my forum friends, but except for the Food Porn thread, I will not be posting on this forum any more, it's just not worth it to me to get beat up every time I say something.

CG...My apologies. [Stuff deleted]
Please don't let one person with whom you generally disagree "ruin" the forum for you. If that were the case, I would've bounced three years ago!
But this thread shows that this forum is still the most informative place on the web for STJ information, IMO.

I live on an island in the middle of Lake Champlain. When I first moved here it was an adventure traveling to work etc. Now it has become something like a NASCAR race but it is what it is. People have discovered what I discovered 30 years ago and they've come. In the summer you learn to go to stores early before the tourists wake up, you learn to be patient driving because our visitors do inject money into the local economy. Your patient with the out of state ice fisherman who drive slowly looking where others are fishing. You remind your friends that it may not be good practice to do things the way they used to do because our little corner of paradise has been discovered and there is a lot more pressure on the land than there ever has been before. We've been discovered. Don't even ask about leaf peepers and apple season. As a younger man I decried the influx of "flatlanders" to our part of the state. My father in law, a state representative and farmer who's family had farmed the same parcel of land since pre-statehood said to me, "you can't just come here and shut the door behind you. If we let you in, we have to let in everyone else. It's progress.
So I have to side with Hugo here. We will be on island in mid March and we see every year what Hugo is talking about at Big Maho. A parking lot at Big Maho will help accommodate the tremendous pressure that beach receives. For public safety and environmental reasons, it will help protect that beach. As much as I would like St John to be the same as when I found it 15 years ago, that is not going to happen. So you have to protect what you've found. Just look at this forum. How we go on and on about how wonderful the place is. You think we don't help attract more people to our "secret paradise?" As much as we hate to admit it, the lots will be a good thing. People are going to come whether they're accommodated or they have to accommodate themselves. I'd choose the former.

You would assume it would be harder to take things out of context on the Food Porn thread, although there is a lot of talk and pictures of un-American food there, so be careful!California Girl wrote:Sorry my forum friends, but except for the Food Porn thread, I will not be posting on this forum any more, it's just not worth it to me to get beat up every time I say something.

Back to the thread – all some are pointing out is that you can’t have your cake and eat too. Not unreasonable.
And now a moment of Maho Zen to help tone down the hyper-sensitivities…

"We park where we shouldn't, stray onto the wrong side of the road when driving (guilty!), and drive drunk or drinking (guilty!). I think all of this must be more than annoying to a resident who is not on vacation, not partying, and just trying to get to work, or to the grocery store, or pick up their kids from school. "
To me, when you say "we", it means me, too. And I haven't parked where I shouldn't drove on the wrong side of the road, and definitely not drunk or drinking. I am probably more courteous to folks when I'm on St. John than in my own neighborhood.
Just because I (or soxfan or anyone else) take exception with your post, doesn't mean you should stop posting. Some words are just taken the wrong way, doesn't mean they shouldn't have been said.
I enjoy Maho and having only traveled in the slow season, I never experienced the situation described. Parking lots for 50 cars will certainly ensure that Maho will become much more crowded - not sure anyone will enjoy that.

Jumbie could use a parking lot. A parking lot would also be very helpful for Gibney. "Facilities" would make Francis much more cruiser friendly. A shuttle to and from the parking lot at Salt Pond would be awesome.
I've thought about this, read what there is to read, considered both the tourist and the local perspective and have come to my own conclusion...it still sux.
Hugo, while I appreciate that the parked cars are annoying, where do you really have to be in such a hurry on a Sunday afternoon. If you have to slow down to 10 mph for a 200 yard stretch, have you really lost that much time?
Certain places have a certain character. I think a lot of us like Maho because it is not like Trunk and is not like what they did to Hawksnest.
It will change. I know. Still sux.

I see what your saying Pete. We all like certain things about certain beaches and we would rather them stay that way. Man if they made Salomon more accesible I would be upset. Hey they do kinda have a shuttle to Salt Pond. The bus, great deal think it was $4 bucks a person round trip, does make alot of stops though.

I actually was talking about a shuttle at Salt Pond just from the parking lot to the beach...'cause we all know the climb back up to the parking lot on a hot day can be a bitch.cptnkirk wrote:I see what your saying Pete. This kind of reminds me of a little restaurant in town that Marcia and I used to like. It only had a few tables and parking could be dicey. But, that was part of the experience of going there. Well, they got the bright idea to move into a larger location where parking was plentiful. They were out of business in less than a year. They lost the vibe.
