any coin collectors here?

Hi everyone. We're cleaning out and emptying the basement for our upcoming remodel and I found some coins.

I have 2 sets of 1984 Olympics commemorative coins. A quick googling shows me they seem to sell for upwards of $700 each.

I also have a bunch of commemorative coins celebrating space shuttle launches.

Does anyone have any idea how a dope like me might be able to sell these items and not get ripped off?

No doubt the best way is to sell them yourself - document them and photograph them as best you can and then start spreading the word. Have you check comps on Ebay and the like?

You might be able to find values, or even auction them off. They auction astronaut autographs, but I'm not sure if they have a place where you can auction your own space memorabilia.

I saw the Olympics coins on Ebay for upwards of $500+. Dealers are selling for somewhere in the $700's. Seriously...where did I even get these from?

I'd do Ebay, but would YOU buy a $500 item from a guy with 20 stars? I wouldn't...

And this is where it starts getting fun. A local dealer offered me just under $800 for both. Some dude I emailed offered $1000 for the 2.

While I like the idea of $1000 more than $800, I wonder how one goes about pulling off a transaction like this over the internet.

Sure sir...let me ship you these valuable coins. You'll pay me, right?

Paypal. Make him pay you first. Upon payment, you ship. My hubs does this ALL the time with watches. He has a bit of a "problem" ... ok he says he can stop anytime but we've all heard that before.

I'm thinking Paypal is the answer. I don't need to get greedy and go for the extra $50 I may make on Ebay.

This buys us a new couch for the living room and some vacation walking around money. Somehow, I am not sure this was what my grandmother had in mind 26 years ago when she bought these. Then again, she was a cagey old bird

Hi Pip,

If you're desperate for cash, know a shady smelter (or have a blast furnace in the attic), and have alot of pre 1982 pennies, the melt value is 2.2 cents each at today's levels. Pre 1965 quarters are $ 3.04 each. Oh btw - it is illegal to melt US coins...good luck with the sale...I hear paypal is a good vehicle on both parties, buy and sell side.

I am not an expert but you might want to wait until the Olympics start (february I think) before selling the Olympic coins. I imagine that interest and value may increase.

I have a buyer...A coin shop in Cape Girardeau MO. They have a website and look to have a real store and everything.

Howevah...

He wants me to ship them and then he'll pay me. Now, call me cynical, but would you ship $1000 worth of goods to a stranger and trust the check to come back?

I suggested he pay me through PayPal and then I'd ship. That way, he could file a case if I didn't hold up my end of the bargain.

I wouldn't trust him. Me being cynical. I would wait till I found someone locally to buy so I could do the transaction in person, even if I got a little less money. Like go to one of those coin shows or something. They have got to go to Charlotte or Raleigh.

That kind of transaction is kind of like Let's Make a Deal, where you are either going to get your money, or nothing behind the curtain.

I guess you could check the Better Business Bureau on the guy. Or if he is on Ebay, you could check his reliability rating.
