Question for first sailing trip

Post by CHM »

After numerous trips to St. John and the BVI, we are excited about our first sailing trip. My first question (of many) is what is the appropriate tip for our Captain? This is a private charter with a Captain/Owner. We are paying for all of the Captain's meals and I assume drinks. So what is an appropriate percentage/tip. We have 3 couples plus the Captain. Thanks in advance for your help.

Ten to twenty percent of the cost of the charter would be customary, depending on the level of service.

Is this also true if the captain is also the owner of the vesel. I always wondered what the ettiquite is, for example (although not maybe a good comparision) when receiveing service from the owner of a salon, for example,in my area a tip is not customary.

15 -20 % of the charter cost --- excluding fuel - is considered the normal tipping range - always depending on your perception of service and it really doesn't matter if the Captain owns the boat etiquette-wise in this industry. It does get shared out amongst the crew, if any.

So you don't tip the crew individually, in addition to the Captain then?

Almost all the working vessels have an established sharing policy so that if you tip the Captain it is shared out in a percentage way that has been decided and agreed to by everyone. Some owner Captains give 100% to the crew.
