You can walk on the beach at night but beware of the sandfleas. My proviso would be it is probably dependent on the time of year you are travelling.
I have been to STJ in April and in 2 weeks the only thing that bit me were fire-eating ants (my fault, I stepped on their home). Otherwise no bites at all. Feb. trip I wore the scars of sand fleas for 10+ months afterwards.

Interesting topic. My daughter came back from a week at Lameshur in early January bemoaning the sand flea bites. In my 8 visits (Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Jul) I have never experienced a "sand flea" bite. I have been a victim of the "no-see-um" onslaught at Francis after 4 pm. I assume sand flea bites would be limited to your lower legs, correct?
The noseeums are also an issue. I guess I think of them as beeing different form sandfleas but maybe folks think of them as the same thing?
Ben's bug spray works for me on island under just about ANY circumstance. My kids will probably have 17 fingers and 3 toes but such is life. At least I'm not miserable.
IMHO Bens is the way to go.

*Another fine scatterbrained production
