Need email on STJ, thinking about Iphone/Blackberry for trip
If you don't want the phone capability you could go with the iPod Touch if you're going to have WiFi avaialble at the villa.

AT&T did NOT charge me any roaming charges while on St. John as they consider it U.S. But - make sure you turn the phone off if you are going anywhere near one of the BVI's. If you do, you will get charged for roaming unless you set it up ahead of time for international service. It was not that expensive to do so.
My Blackberry worked great. Every once in a while I would have to move away from a mountain that may have been blocking my signal.
Just as most have said, you will need to purchase both a cell phone plan and data plan.

Now that might be the ticket. I have wanted an Ipod for a long time. This could kill two birds with one stone.
That way with the TOUCH you could have all the apps and music and even watch movies you've downloaded.
BUT you wouldn't have to pay for phone and you wopuldn't be able to access e-mail and internet unless you have access to WiFi. So no responding to e-mails from the beach I'm guessing.
Worth a look though!

A couple of thoughts:
iPod - the computer store in Cruz Bay has wireless access points around town...It costs about $7 a day, but you could probably get a much better rate for a week. http://computer-express.vi/internet_access.htm
ATT has their GO phone service. This is a prepaid/pay as you go system with NO contract. You can get data plans on the Go Phone prepaid system. I am pretty sure they offer blackberrys.
Walmart has their own branded pay as you go phone service with text and data and my understanding is that they use Verizon towers. People have stated that Verizon has good service on the island so that might be an option.

Husband on the beach + booze = not a good idea to answer work emails!Gromit wrote:That way with the TOUCH you could have all the apps and music and even watch movies you've downloaded.

I think he ruffled enough feathers in the past with his drunk dialing "ha ha, I'm sitting on the beach right now, drunk, and your not" hijinks last year.
The house has WiFi so he could do his checking once in the morning and once at night.
I like the video feature, I would definately use that on the plane as well at home.
I am also going to look into the ATT prepaids as well.
I love using my iphone and have no issues emailing on it from St. John or anywhere else. However, the men in my life feel somewhat differently. Having to type anything beyond a sentence or two can be tough due to larger hands. If he won't need to do a lot of typing or doesn't mind it, then never mind.
If that might be a concern, you might consider a Netbook, which is like a laptop but no drives, and much, much smaller and easier to travel with. A friend of mine just used one on a recent trip for the same purposes you're describing and preferred that much more than to typing things out on the iPhone. Many brands have a simple version of Netbooks that sell in the $250-300 range, which is a little more but not much, and it's a one-time cost. If you're only using it on occasion, then a lower-priced one would work fine.
Anyway, just a suggestion from someone who's listened to "Ugggggghhh, I cannot type ANYTHING on this phone!" several times during a week-long trip.

Too funny, Gromit and I messaged at exactly the same time with exactly the same idea

I'm no techno, but maybe something like an ipod touch?

It's not a cell phone, so you don't have to have an expensive monthly plan and it sounds like you wanted to keep your other phone, but you have to be able to have access to wifi.

Ok, I feel really stupid asking this question but by transfering, do you mean it happens automatically, like the phone will pull from Sprint towers?DCphoto wrote:Hi, if you have Nextel that means you can transfer to the Sprint network, same company. I have the Sprint blackberry and it worked great all over the Island, my husband had the I phone and had to go to town to get better service, his did not work at the Westin unless he went to the beach.
Sandy
Or do I need to call Sprint and get something switched?
I have an unlocked phone, a cheapy samsung I think, a prepaid GO phone that we have used in the past.
When we travelled to VG and Turks and Caicos, we just picked up a pre-paid sims card at Digitel and used those numbers for the week.
When I asked why we couldn't just put the card in our Nextel Motorolas, I was told that the phones work off a different type of frequency (or something) than all other phones.
Maybe it is the type of phones we have?
