December 15

Our LAST full day of vacay! But I’m NOT going to think about that!! I’m not. I won’t. I’m going to soak up every minute of this day and enjoy it!

Dammit!!

It seems that this morning’s breakfast was potluck. A challenge was issued – I know not by whom – to come up with creative breakfast combinations. We had a little bit of everything and our goal was to try and eat up what was left so as not to waste any food.

I paused for a moment in my usual morning stupor and as I surveyed the various ingredients at my disposal I asked myself, “Self, WWED (What Would Elvis Do)?”

Hmmm…. Let’s see…I have bagels… I have crunchy peanut butter… I have strawberry jam… And most people would have stopped right there...but not Elvis and certainly not me… and what else?

TENESSEE SMOKED BACON!!!

Yes! Amen. Hallelujah and pass the bacon, I made my very first PBJ&Bacon bagel sandwich. I called it the "Gromit Special."

Now lest you judge me too harshly, I have to say that it was pretty damn good. Seriously. Give it a try when you’ve got these ingredients at your fingertips next time — you won’t regret it! Vicki got a shot of the offending monster of a breakfast sandwich and let me say it was WAY yummy!!

After our breakfast we went for a snorkel. I was determined to make it out to Mary Point since we were already anchored half-way there so off we all went!

The visibility pretty much sucked due to the fact that the swells were up that week and it can take some time for things to settle down a bit -- but we saw PLENTY. And within a few minutes we spotted our first turtle. Then a few minutes later a second turtle. They were HUGE.

Mr. Vicki got some amazing shots of these babies and we just hung out and watched them peacefully glide thru the water for a while until they were done with us and skirted away.

I continued my snorkel out to the point (the right side of Francis facing the water). I was cruising along in the somewhat murky water and literally almost ran into TWO more unsuspecting turtles.

As soon as I saw them I immediately put on the snorkel brakes (for novices this is basically flexing your feet so that they are at a 90 degree angle to your legs). This is about the best that one can do to keep from running right over stuff that you don’t want to hit when gliding through the water.

So I slammed on the brakes and barely managed to literally NOT bump into one of the turtles. One looked up sleepily and just stared at me like, “Do you mind? Watch the road you crazy tourist!”

I literally could have stretched out both hands and touched them both they were so close to me.

I was able to hold my position in the water for quite some time and the turtles and I stared at one another, studying each other closely.

They looked me over, I looked them over and there we sat for what seemed like forever. Finally they realized that I was too dumbstruck to move, so they decided to take the pressure off, turned and just glided away. It was all kind of surreal. But cool and Zen all at the same time. I love STJ!

After a while I booked it back to the boat- I had gone all the way to Mary point so it was quite a swim. I definitely got my exercise that morning.

We got tidied up on the boat and I called Pia to touch base about meeting at Francis in an hour. It was at this point that Mr. ScubaGirl informed me that we were low on gas for the dinghy and needed gas and 2 stroke motor oil. The gas I understood but not the oil (yeah I’m dumb like that) I was like why do you need the oil?

Finally, after much discussion we came up with a plan. I would ask—nay beg—Pia to take us to the Coral Bay gas station and Love City Mini Mart to try and obtain said gas and said motor oil. Mr. ScubaGirl would ride in the truck with me and Pia and Mr. Gromit would guard the dinghy while we were gone on this little errand.

Pia, being the GODDESS that she is GRACIOUSLY agreed to help us out.

So we dinghied in on the fumes that we had in the tank and beached the Dinghy. Mr. ScubaGirl piled into the back of the truck with the gas can and I got into the cab with Pia.

Apparently Mr. Gromit got creative with my iPhone while we were gone and took these:

This was not exactly the way I envisioned spending my last day on vacation but I was happy to take a hit for the team. So off we went to Coral Bay and I began to spew forth all the crazy tales of the last few days.

Let me tell you that Pia is about the best girlfriend a girl could ever want or have. She knows when to listen and let a girl talk.

We hit the gas station and filled up the tank and then hit Love City Mini Mart for the oil – THANK GOD they had it. It was here that Mr. ScubaGirl finally explained to me that to run the dinghy it required a MIXTURE of gas and the oil. Sorry – but I had no clue! I am a PR Director people! I don’t know nothing about no stinking engines!

Having what we needed we headed back to Francis, Pia and I gossiping the whole way. When we got back to Francis we got Mr. ScubaGirl filled up and off -- back to the boat.

We radioed over and determined that Vicki et al had been hopelessly sucked into the gravitational pull of the SS Scatterbrained. So we were on our own for the day, me, Mr. Gromit and Pia. That’s OK people! More Pia for me!!

As we were standing there on the beach, none other than Captain Brandi himself pulled up taking shots of Francis with his web cam. Pia and I decided that this was a REALLY good time to moon the camera. We shouted to him that everyone was on the boat and to head over for a visit. He finally understood and off he went to visit with the crew on Island Sister.

We decided that it was high time to head to the Tourist Trap to get some lunch. So off we headed to Salt Pond. God I love that drive. Mr. Gromit occupied the bed of the truck and we were off.

Not far from Francis we spotted a rental Jeep literally STOPPED in the middle of the road. Pia being a veteran lost tourist spotter (and me not far behind) told me to roll down my window and ask if they needed help.

So I leaned out and said, “Hey, you need any help?”

They paused for a second and said, “No. We’re OK.”

Hmmm. That's funny. They didn't look OK. They looked lost. Not convinced, I inquired again, “Are you SURE? Where are you trying to go?”

Bear in mind that these folks were stopped dead in the MIDDLE of the road towards Francis, right at the Annaberg split facing toward Mary Creek.

They paused again and replied, “No. We’re fine. Ummmm… wait. We’re trying to get to Coral Bay.”

Uhhh yeah. They were going the WRONG way.

Word of advice people: if a local, or someone who looks like it and stops to ask if you need help or directions, please take them up on it.

At this point Pia and I looked at each other and laughed.

“Ummm yeah. You are going the wrong way and you can’t get there going that way. Why don’t you follow us? We’ll wave you around when we get close.”

At some point on this morning's boondoggle I realized that I had not grabbed my flip flops from the boat. This of course wasn’t a problem as long as the other folks would be joining us from the boat but since I was on my own now I was without footwear.

Pia suggested that we stop by her place on the way to the Tourist Trap and grab a pair of Les’ crocs. I would look ridiculous (I'd gotten pretty good at looking ridiculous at this point-- In fact I think I earned a PhD in ridiculous on this trip) but it would definitely cut down on any additional bruises or injuries which was a MUST at this point.

So off we went to Pia's with the “NO, I’m not lost” lost tourist following close behind us. When we got to Pia’s turn off we waved them around and they honked in gratitude as they headed toward Coral Bay.

Pia gave us the tour of their place and all the renovations being done. Absolutely FANTASTIC!

Doing a bathroom renovation myself (See my recent post in the off topic forum) I could totally appreciate the work they were doing to the place. Pia has GREAT taste!

We also got to meet the puppies!! They were a welcome surprise and reminded us that we were missing our own little guy. Pia’s babies aren’t spoiled… no they are not (can you detect the sarcasm as I type?) These babies are the most beloved and well-cared for dogs on island… they HAVE to be.

I was presented with a pair of Les’ Crocs and off we went FINALLY to the Tourist Trap. I was hungry and Pia had EARNED her lunch!

We pull into the TT and wander in and who do we run into but Lovermont and Mr. Lovermont!!! YAY!! HUGS all around!!

Funny thing about STJ and this forum, you never know WHO you are going to run into. And the great thing is that most of us feel like we know each other already!

Lovermont and her hubby were just finishing up lunch but graciously hung out with us and chatted for a while over drinks. We caught up on all the forum gossip and Mr. Lovermont (in a British midlands accent) asked suspiciously why I had chosen the screen name, Gromit.

I told him that it was actually the name of our Pembroke Welsh Corgi and that we had named HIM after the BBC cartoon character from Wallace & Gromit. A huge smile of appreciation spread across his face. Personally I love the Wallace & Gromit cartoons so I wear the screen name proudly.

Anyway, we chatted about this and that until Mr. Lovermont was itching to do some more hiking. So off they went to work off their lunch.

It was so GREAT to meet you Lovermont! You and your hubby are FAB!!

We had lobster rolls and nachos and so many Drink Right's Keep Lefts that I lost count. The TT is fast becoming one of my favorite haunts on island. The food is GREAT.

There was one family that showed up while we were there and ordered burgers all around. And then complained because they didn’t like how the burgers were cooked.

Seriously people, if you want a burger go to Skinny Legs. But if you want great wings, nachos, lobster sandwiches and just about anything else on the menu is absolutely fantastic. But hey, you can’t make everyone happy!

I paid for lunch, Pia had not only taken us to get gas, but she listened to me talk for an hour straight AND provided me with SHOES. Seriously Pia I TOTALLY OWE YOU BIG TIME. It was the least I could do!

At this point we decided that it was time to head back. We went back and forth about whether Pia wanted to come on the boat for a visit or if she wanted to hang out on the beach with us for a while. But she needed to head back home.

I slipped her a $20 for gas and thanked her again for being my guardian angel that day and helping us out. I honestly don’t know what we would have done if she hadn’t helped us out!

The other great thing about forum people is that they will totally help you out if you need it. This is not the first time I’ve been on the receiving end of such gracious hospitality from a fellow forumite and I do try to pay it forward.

Pia, you will forever be my STJ angel. Thank you! XOXOX

Pia left and Mr. Gromit decided to hang out on the beach for a while and read. We laid out the neat sheet and out towels and just hung out.

It started to rain a bit so I just pulled my towel over my body and laid directly on the Neat Sheet (which is waterproof). I stayed nice and dry and just kept reading in the downpour.

Finally the rain subsided and the sun came back out and we radioed to Mr. ScubaGirl to come and grab us.

Once back on the boat we got cleaned up and started the long and arduous process of trying to repack all my crap. This was far less difficult than I imagined it would be. And before long I was actually packed.

We made dinner aboard that night and just hung out.
After dinner Vicki and I sat up top and discussed the week behind us and the week ahead.

We both agreed that re-entry was probably going to be a lot tougher than usual because of being out on the boat.

The fact was we had spent a week living totally out of our comfort zone and with the elements. It was almost like glorified camping in many ways. Sure we had some amenities but you were still subject to the whims of Mother Nature.

The idea of going back to an office and sitting down in front of a computer and getting back to life as we knew it suddenly seemed like a Herculean task and not one we seriously wanted to tackle.

We agreed that this was definitely a great trip and certainly worth doing again. I think we both felt that we had learned a lot about how to handle ourselves and had built up some confidence about the whole concept of sailing as a vacation. We could definitely get used to this, especially since we now knew what to expect and would be more able and prepared to do our part.

The stars twinkled overhead and we just leaned back and let the cool night caress our faces. And we sighed.

And sighed some more.

Tomorrow: The Sail of Woe -- Heading back to Frenchtown STT; a sea rescue of the SS. Minnow (no kidding!); heading to the airport, my visit with Virginia Governor Tim Kaine in the Delta lounge in Atlanta; food poisoning courtesy of Chili’s at ATL; and some final thoughts, reflections and list of Travel Tips.
*Another fine scatterbrained production

I'm loving hearing about your week on the boat and all your adventures and enjoying all your great pictures. My husband and I did this the week prior on the La Bella Vita (catamaran) out of STT and we just loved it. Like you, it took awhile to get used to the small cabin, bathroom situation, shower situation and nightly rain showers, but I have to say it was probably one of my very best vacations ever and all of those short-comings were very quickly dismissed and forgotten. I did not take the time to do a trip report (sorry) but let me just say that for anyone that has been inspired to do so, just go for it; it will not disappoint. So glad that you all had such a wonderful experience. I'm going to miss reading your reports but I guess that all good things must to come an end; at least until next time. Ali~
