Two useful apps for iPhone camera.

Pano: enables stitching together of photos as you take them to create a panoramic shot. Works really easily and well.

Genius: A nice zoom feature along with several others like an anti-shake feature. Also easy to use.

Now, does anyone know an easy way to transfer photos from the iPhone to the computer without syncing all photos that are on the computer back on to the iPhone?

Not sure if this is really the best way, but I just email them to myself.

Go to your settings and select to manually manage the sync process. That way, the iPhone only will sync to your computer what you select and nothing will sync back to your computer from the iPhone unless you tell it to.

Typically with devices like iPhones, MP3 Players and digital cameras, you can access the device from 'My Computer' just like a hard-drive or CDROM drive.

Just go to 'My Computer', double-click on the iPhone in the list of drives, and you can explore the folders in your iPhone just like they were folders on your computer's hard drive.

I try to avoid using iTunes to sync my iPhone as it is a HUGE resource hog and behaves a lot like a virus (takes-over the machine, attempts to sequester any and all media content, interferes with normal usage).

Once again, Apple got the hardware part of the equation right, but dropped the ball on the software side (not that Windows is really any better than OS-X - it ain't).

I discovered that Mac computers are smart enough to recognize new pictures on the iPhone and simply will import them just as if from a regular digital camera using iPhoto.
Good info however for importing to a PC.

UF Prof - I've got an iPhone and a MacBook with iPhoto installed. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the photos from the phone into iPhoto on my Mac. Can you walk me through it?
