TiVo

I am going to get TiVo for my son who is in college. I really don't know much about it. I want to get one that is most current with all the bells and whistles because he is very into tech.

Also, is there a charge per month? How much is that?

Gina, I'm not sure about Tivo, never had one, but I am sure there is a monthly charge for it. Does your son have cable, or satellite service where he is, and does he subscribe? If he is already paying a monthly charge for cable, most cable companies offer a DVR for less than the monthly charge for Tivo.

Just something to think about.

TiVo is a brand name. Let's call it what it is, DVR, digital video recorder (it doesn't have to be TiVO). He would need a cable/satellite subscription. Ya know, cable company X, directTV, DISH, etc. The units are pretty standard, but you want HD and a "two" recorder unit.

Dave, a Tivo is a brand name DVR. You have to pay a monthly fee for the service to use it. You can connect it to any TV, but unless you subcribe to Tivo, you will not receive anything.

It is a moot point, but that is why I asked Gina if her son already has cable or a satellite connection, because he would be paying for the service that way. Then all he would have to do is add the DVR (that the cable company offers) for a smaller fee. But like Gina said, no cable, lives in a dorm.

Gina, just go with a Tivo and service fee. That would be the simple solution.

Bert, that helps me a lot. I know he plans on living in the dorms for 2 years so--he should get his use out of it. Later, when he gets his own place he can get the DVR with his provider.

I've had a TiVo since 2002 and LOVE it. I think it's the best DVR out there. It's very user-friendly.

Instead of paying for the monthly service fee you can buy a lifetime subscription. When I bought mine I think I paid $249 and now it's up to $399 for the lifetime subscription. Still well worth it in my opinion.
