Elkhorn Coral Makes Endangered Species "Hot List"
Elkhorn Coral Makes Endangered Species "Hot List"
Interesting news about how next week's climate conference in Copenhagen affects the Virgin Islands:
"As world government leaders prepare to discuss climate change at next week's 2009 Climate Conference in Copenhagen, the Endangered Species Coalition issued its list of "10 Hottest Species" endangered by global warming. Making the nonprofit's list are the Caribbean's elkhorn coral, already included as a threatened species on the federal Endangered and Threatened Species list."

Thankfully, there are more recent studies showing a bit of a cooling off period is beginning for the oceans (I doubt these recent studies will be mentioned in Copenhagen). But, even with global warming in decline now, according to studies, there's still the pollution problem which can cause acidic situations that affect the coral. Irresponsible toxic dumping from boats happens, unfortunately.
One of the easiest ways to help the coral directly when you're on vacation, don't hit it with the propeller of your jet ski or boat as I've seen idiots do. Preventing that is something we can all do without government/political intervention.
