Anthony, amazingly beautiful architecture. Recently, I was told not to go because it was "dirty". Is that true?? When I looked at the pictures I wondered if the meant because it wasn't sparkling new??

Rome (Italy, etc.) is "dirty" is something you hear from a certain set of travelers. I grew up around NY and NJ - so to say a city is dirty...

In the Roman Forum, it is ancient, that is for sure. But that whole area is a park/museum. In Rome and in a lot of other Italian cities you will find graffiti (they invented it for goodness sake!), full garbage bins, lack of garbage bins, small sidewalks that can be treacherous, cigarette butts all over the place (but usually cleaned up pretty thoroughly by morning), etc, etc.

I mean - Italy is different. The people in Europe, from the north to the south are different, in Italy, from the north to the south of this country alone, there are huge differences, just like the people in the U.S. are different from Maine to Texas to California, etc. (yes I am generalizing since most people are sort of the same too but I think you get my drift - there are regional differences). I think it is all pretty relative. However, I COULD NOT imagine not traveling to Rome (or Italy) because it was "dirty". You have to go - at least once!

Ditto what Anthony said. Rome took my breath away. I had also heard that it was "dirty" and full of "gypsies". That couldn't be further from the truth.

The history and art are undescribable. The most frustrating part is knowing that the pictures we took did not capture the actual art or scenery. You have to see it for yourself.

It's clean, the people are friendly, food is amazing. Rome should be on everyone's "bucket list".

Ditto what Anthony said. To those people who sum up a City as amazing as Rome, by saying "it's dirty" I say of cousre it is, its been around for at least two millenium. If you have the opportunity, please go, you will not be disappointed. And tell your friends to go to Epcot, I hear its nice and clean .

Great pics - thanks Anthony! I LOVE Rome and hope to get back someday! Florence too. The Italians are part of why I loved both of those cities; I just love them.

Our first time there was in 2000 for the Jubilee year so everything was "clean". All of the statues in the fountains and around town had been cleaned up and everything seemed just too clean to us. The last time were were there (2005), the statues were no longer perfectly clean, and it seemed more like they had been there as long as they had. Makes me wish I was sitting in Piazza Navona people watching right now.
