PA GIRL: we are going to Playa Del Carmin in December. Do you have a link to the website with the fussy people?? I might get some tips.

Also, cypress mentioned the produce. If we are staying at a 5 star resort do we really need to worry about that??

It is the Trip Advisor site, which has lots of subforums for that area.

I have not doubt that if someone looked in my bag, they would say "why is she taking that?" so gals, take your flat irons and be happy!

My favorite complaint about Mexico is when I read that travelers are upset because the people all speak spanish?? Excuse me??

We love Mexico and are contemplating a trip in the spring due to the lower cost. Xcaret is a cool place, especially if you are into the history aspect. I actually enjoyed xel-ha more, because it's more based around water activites.

Mexico is different then St. John for sure, but there are favorite aspects of both. We love the AI breakfast local dishes and I've actually always eaten the produce in the big resorts and been fine. No way would I buy it from a small restaurant though. The guacamole, pico and chips with drinks is usually my lunch every day at an AI. You will have a great time and those comments from the boards are hilarious!!

Having just returned from Cancun, I will add a few related thoughts on my experience there... third trip to Cancun.

No one on any flights was noticed wearing a mask, nor did we notice anyone in Mexico who appeared to be sick or getting over an illness.

Immigration does give out a required survey on your state of health, as fever, coughing, stuffy sinus, etc. and for contact information, which was specifically directed at the swine flu. I have, however, filled out such a survey in Mexico prior to the H1N1 breakout.

Several years ago I did become sick after eating foods at smaller, rural places. Since then, I have eaten anything I wished at major resorts and restaurants with no bad effects. I do drink only bottled water yet consume drinks with Ice.

Most staff at resorts and attractions will speak very good English but appreciate attempts from their guests to try some Spanish.

The weather was lovely. My hair required more conditioner, probably from the treated water, not the humidity.

The "season" has not gotten underway yet, and we found most foods and services to be quite a good price... we enjoyed our time there.

Edited to add that the mosquitoes were quite bad in Cancun at dusk as hurricane Ida had passed through about ten days before.

Even though it is a year away, we are looking forward to it. I know it will be a different type of vacation than we have taken over the past years and that is ok.

It did, however, sort of require me to give up our planned June, 15th anniversary STJ trip and I still haven't quite gotten over that yet. (that trip may still happen if there are deals to be found)

My mom, who is absolutely insane about germs and dirt, said the same thing about the lack of masks and illness. (They just got back three weeks ago)
