I have never seen waves as big as those pictured, but I have seen days on the North Shore beaches were there was less beach to sit on due to breaking surf. I'm talking about 1-2 foot break. Those pictured appear to be in the 4-6 foot range.
Thanks for the answer. Will just stay on the east end on the days when the beach is small.

Undertow is not as much a problem as face vs. coral and rubble or even sand. We saw a bride to be get facial fractures when she was tossed by a wave on Cinnamon Bay in 2002. In 2004 I saw a 4 year old get overwhelmed and have to be dragged in on Capoon's Bay on Tortola. These are not East Coast barrier island beaches that are just made of sand and more sand. By the time you have the opportunity to hit an undertow you've been beaten into chum against coral by the North Swell.

Go South!

Interesting. When I saw the swells, I thought,"No big deal". I've been in far worse surf every day at Jones Beach. But no one was swimming and we thought discretion was the better part of valor.

We just returned and the wind was from the E or ESE all week. The north shore was fantastic. I had expected to spend time on the south shore because of November swells but they never showed so it was a week at Denis, Salomon, Francis and Leinster.
