SCUBA

Post by Jamestown »

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone is working on their SCUBA certification in preparation for STJ. I have 2 classes to complete and then 4 open water dives (in a quarry....yikes!). We'll have to wear wetsuits to stay warm. Looking forward to an excursion with Colette at 6Paq.

Ow! When are you doing your qualification dives? I imagine that quarry will be tad icey? I did my qual dives in October in Virginia and the water was still terribly cold at depth.

Good luck!

Cheers, RickG

Actually, I am just about to do that. I took the first class yesterday and have 4 more to go. Planning to do the dives with Colette at 6paq. The dates are not set yet, but preliminary dates are April 25 and 27.

You'll love Colette! I am a scuba weenie & she got me to about 30 feet down on an orientation dive. I keep thinking of actually getting certified (diving was SOOO much cooler than snorkeling which really surprised me), but with two kids under 5 its tough to find the time. Some day....

Rick G,
Our dives will be at a quarry in Millbrook, VA near the intersection of 15 & 66. I believe the instructor said off state road 55. I believe the certification dives begin in May and I'm dreading the cold. I freeze in the pool!

Mrsb,
I live in Waynesboro, PA...a little over 2 hours from Philly. Actually I'm very close to Hagerstown and Frederick MD. 20 min from Chambersburg, PA. I want to be included in the big Virginia get-together!

Remember: NEVER HOLD YOUR BREATH!!!

Happy diving,

flip-flop,
I was in the same boat as you....have done lots of snorkeling and even took a resort dive course, but the kids and work always limited my free time. FINALLY I'm able to dedicate an evening a week to this endeavor......at 44!!

It was the DON'T FORGET TO BREATHE admonition that FREAKED me out. I was so obsessed with not forgetting to breathe that I hyperventilated every time I tried to get my head in the water.

I don't know how Colette did it but she managed to relax me and had me under in a matter of minutes. I was a tough nut to crack!

Maggy,
Our trip to STJ is August 9-17. We have a date with Colette on the 12th, however this will be a beginning SCUBA session for my hubby and 2 daughters. I'm going to schedule a dive or two with Colette sometime during the week. I've already spent a small fortune on the basics.....fins, booties, snorkel and mask!

All I can say is that I wish I was working on it.
That is something I have always wanted to do.
It sounds like I can still go in STJ without certification, huh?
I don't think I could convince any of my family members to go with me though. :(
Maybe one of the women on the "STJ women gone wild" trip will go with me in November. :)

Some of you polar bears may want to consider doing all of your class work and confined water dives at home, then doing the open water check out dives somewhere warm, likke say...St John!

I've been certified since 1985 but if diving in sub 60 degree water had been a requirement I don't think I'd have been able to do it (being a Florida warm water wimp and all!).

Congratulations and good luck!
