Night snorkel,Maho Bay style!

Post by parafins »

I have checked the Maho Camps website out and have found that they have night snorkel trips.I think they go out to Whistling Cay.I mentioned this for those of you that have never tried night snorkling and are a bit nervous to try it.Some people might like to try it first with a group.I myself have tried just one night snorkel and really enjoyed it.This year I will try it again.Last year we stayed one night at Cinnamon Bay Camps and as I walked on the beach that night I noticed several kyacks coming in from what I believe was a night snorkel.I wonder if they have a program like Maho Camps?Good luck trying something new my snorkel friends!Parafins..

Sounds like fun - especially going out to Whistling Cay! I posted once before, but don't recall the answer - are the bugs nasty at this hour? It says 6:30-8:30pm. I haven't even considered night snorkeling for fear of no see ums attacking me like they do at dusk.

Thanks for the link!

Night snorkeling would be cool, but I get disoriented fairly easily. I'm afraid I might lose my sense of direction, up and down if I snorkeled at night. I probably would have to have a really huge flashlight......anyone have any pictures from a night snorkel?

Secret Harbour offers night snorkeling on STT ... each person has their own glow stick and flashlight. Assume they stay together as a group but do get to see some of the nitetime creatures while those who sleep are tucked away.

Cool idea--this sounds really fun! I wonder if you have to be staying at their place to join in the trip?

I took the night snorkel in early March and it was awesome. I went on the Ocean Quest to Whistling Caye. They furnish flashlights and wet suits. I saw a huge Parrot fish sleeping on his side and a giant lobster was resting near him. Saw lots of turtles. I would highly recommend this trip.

Snorkels,That sure sounds like fun!I have another tip for you all,If your trying a night snorkel for the first time you might want to choose a beach with a sand entry.Hawksnest,Maho, and Francis would be good. All have a short walk to the beach, all have coral in shallow areas.I don't think I would want to go too far from the beach. When I went to Hawksnest last year I entered the water, snorkeled around for a few minutes and could not see where the beach was because it was too dark.I gave a whistle to my friend on the beach and she turned on the flashlight and I felt much better.I have mentioned before that I bought a used dive light from ebay. This baby has a back up lamp just in case the first one burns out.It cost me $35.00 not bad in my opinion.Parafins... :D

Night snorkeling really does sound like a lot of fun!
I would have to stay awake though.
And, the not drinking part, I don't know...
I guess I could go to Happy Hour, take a nap and then go.

I'd like to try this, but only in a group, I think. I have been scuba diving (in a group) at night and it is amazing how much you can see--creatures that are not around during the day out looking for food.

Does anyone know, do you just call the Maho campground to sign up for the group trip?
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

We actually went with a large group (14), which was really a bit too much and most of them could have starred in the move "Cocoon".....if you get my drift. It was pretty entertaining. We also have been night snorkeling alone (my bf and I) around the point between little Maho and big Maho. Really neat. Sea Urchins come out at night and move around on the ocean floor.

I need to ask again before this is something I want to do - do you get attacked by bugs at night when coming out of the water or are they gone by this time. I am attacked at dusk.

Also, at Secret Harbour - does anyone know the rates and more info on this? We plan to stay there our last night in June. Thanks!!
