Ruth, I so admire your courage to do something like that and to follow your heart.

I wish we were so brave.

sorry. I'm not around the computer much......

Pipalale: I'm glad NC has worked out. My parents were in your area for about 20 years from NY. They did like it. Now they are back to WesternNY for family reasons. Keep visiting..... maybe we meet.

Augie: Actually we get too busy for the beaches. We have been to them more recently, tho. We aren't far for a swim at Francis and at 5pm it is empty. HOWEVER, high season is coming- which, for economic reasons, is good.

Ruth, I loved reading your story. Our family is planning our first trip to STJ this summer and from reading these posts, I know I want to visit The St. John Spice Company! Best wishes for continued success and happiness in Paradise! Jo

How about someone who lives on STT?

I am really curious how/why you all made the decision to move to STJ and if you are happy with your choice. My husband and I made the statement after our first visit to the Virgin Islands that one day we would live here. It took several years and lots more visits, but we finally took the leap and moved. Been here almost two years and no regrets.

Did any of you move with children? No, can't help you there.

How did your families (back in the states) handle the move? Some thought we would never do it, some were sad, some took it as though it would just be temp and we would be back and some were jealous as heck. :-)

Do they visit you often? Family hasn't visited much, but friends have and my "forum" family visits ALOT!

How often do you go "home"? We've gone once a year so far.

Did you have jobs lined up before you got there? Yes. Jay found my job for me (nice of him) but it took a year of me bugging them to actually get it. He got his from all his postings on all the forums. They contacted him and he got the job as soon as we were on island.

Housing? We had temp housing lined up at the university for 6 weeks and then found something before our lease was up.

Would you do it again? Absolutely!!! :-) We are having such a great time. Even though work gets in the way once and awhile, we find a way to manage.

We keep a blog of our daily adventures in STT. It keeps the friends and family informed of what's going on so we don't have to tell the same stories over and over again. Although we usually do anyway.

I'm not on STJ, but have travelled there enough to know it's got quite a few parallels to AXA in terms of resources. I would say from my experience, you can do anything you really have a passion to do, just go wtih enough knowledge that the rose colored glasses are completely off, and then you won't need quite so much bravery to do it. I feel so grateful to live in such a beautiful place, that little daily conveniences we all take for granted in the US start to matter much less....though I will enjoy some of those things on my yearly trip back later this year! :-)
