Olympus camera ?
Olympus camera ?
I just got a Olympus 850SW delivered yesterday. Is this thing REALLY WATERPROOF?
Sure does not look like it to me! The first test will be in 4 weeks at Virgin Gorda & I am not going to be a happy camper if it floods on me.
I just snorkel so no depth is envolved. Olympus does sell an underwater housing for under 10 feet. Should I buy it? Thanks! ....Giz

Hey Gizzmo -
I bought the olympus 1030 sw for our Jluy trip. On our second snorkel at Trunk, mine flooded. Before I wen in the water, I pushed on the two doors to make sure they were sealed. That happened on our 2nd day, so we had no underwater pics from that trip. I personally would never buy another olympus, but many here have had great experiences with them. Like they say, one bad experience is all you need.

Gizzmo- Yeah these things are waterproof.
Make sure you close it up tight before hitting the water and rinse it in freshwater every day after use.
Lots of folks have them and use them underwater...that's what they're for!
And, yes...every now and then one is going to fail/leak etc....sometimes because of manufacturing defects and sometimes because of user error.
I used my 770SW underwater no problems....and I even smashed it on the rocks at Waterlemon (dented it), still, no problems....
Enjoy!

We have an Olympus 770SW and have literally taken thousands of underwater photos with it. Make sure all the seals are free of grit and dirt before closing it up. Try a q-tip with alcohol to swipe it down.
Ours did eventually leak eventually but we put some miles on that camera. It had been dropped several times and banged around a lot. Gringo baked it on the lowest heat for a couple of hours and got it working again but we don't take it in the ocean any more.
We just ordered a new one and got the underwater case for it anyway as a double backup and a skin to help with the dropping and banging.

Took my Olympus 850 SW out snorkeling this summer while on a cruise. It leaked (for no good reason I might add - I'm really careful). Warranty was still good so I sent it in for repair.
No questions asked, Olympus basically rebuilt the camera. New lens, LCD display, CPU board. They did include a "how to care for your camera" sheet when they sent it back. Anyway - I thought it was excellent support of their warranty.
However - the battery is shot. The charge light just blinks when the battery is in (supposed to stay lit). So - I'll have to buy another battery before I can check out their repair work.
But - I'll be taking underwater pictures again next winter in the islands!

We have a 790 and an 850. The first leaked on our 2nd day out. Olympus replaced it for free. The 2nd one has never leaked. They both work great and take great pictures. Now we have a spare, just in case. Be sure to follow all directions about care between uses, such as rinsing etc. Hubby does some free diving to depths below the suggested depth. He's only too deep for the camera for a few seconds, and it has never even been a problem.
