Actually Sailorgirl, I was disappointed that Bush let the illegal Mexicans keep flooding in. So I'm not afraid to be critical of my own party if it deserves it. There's plenty of bad to go around. I'm just choosing the lesser of 2 evils.

Sailorgirl...Below is my response to your posting of the Nobel winners. Nowhere in my response did I say Nobel was "stupid". Are they left leaning? Yes, Like the Tower of Piza (although I guess that one depends on your position on the ground, relative to that of the tower, but I digress).

You guys like to make your points, and then say "Ok, I'm out". Why? Stand strong and voice your opinion. I have no problem with hat...I enjoy thoughtful discourse. However completely misguided I may think many of you are, I know that you are grounded in your beliefs...And most importantly, that you have thought them through. It is the prism through which you see things (idealistic) that is the problem. Likewise, I'm sure that you have a problem with my prism through which I see the world (pragmatism).

But why must you become angry? Like I said, defending a guy you voted for is difficult sometimes...But it only gets tougher. Are you just going to curl up in a little ball? Or will you stay and defend him?

I'd say the same thing to your face and while I'm on STJ, I don't tend to hang with people I don't know, except for my SOTB sisters. I'm sure I'll never cross paths with most of you, so I'm not too worried. I'm actually quite nice and I don't think I'd have a fist fight with anyone.

! Hell, most of my SOTB sisters voted opposite of me, (although I suspect one or two might not now) but it never was an issue. We understand and respect each other's feelings.

While you have really good points fatboy I honestly do not think anyone has crossed the line in this thread. I will say it again and again that we disagree and that is a good thing as long as no one takes it personally.

We disagree--we debate---so what. Keep it in perspective. There might be some personality differences but I bet we would all get along in St. John just fine.

Sox... I was not responding directly to you nor do I beleive my post in any way indicated I was responding directly to you. Another poster used the phrase "stupid prize."

Also, I am not angry, not to sound harsh but I would have to care more about this exchange to be angered by it. I am just choosing to disengage, there is a big difference.

On this thread I posted two comments, one in which I questioned why vitriol was being directed at the receipent of an award rather than the committee who made the award. The other post was a response to calling The Nobel "a stupid prize." While we may not agree on every selection, my list of receipents was meant as a way to get past the knee jerk reaction and educate ourselves on some of the past recipents.

I have the great good fortune to be aquainted with a Nobel winner. He is an unassuming man who was honored for work which may have an important effect on Alzheimers research.

That being said, was I surprised at Obama's selection... yes. Do I think it means the end of civilalized soceity as we know it... no.
Is the Nobel selection process perfect... by no means! Have questionable choices been made... yes, Will they continue to be made in the future,... most probably. Its the tenor of the discousre that troubles me... not the discourse itself.

I have meant to comment on this. I know that Obama didn't ask for the award. I can only speak for myself. It is just hard for me to hear people spin and and justify the award. There isn't a reason but we are being told that we should be happy. It is just absurd.

I feel like it is the same record playing praising "the one" and it is all just spun and it is tiring. A little honestly is refreshing and I appreciate that you admit that you don't understand it.

Amen, to that, Gina. We can disagree and still be civil and respectful to each other. It's not easy being in the minority sometimes, but that doesn't mean anyone should sacrifice their principles just to go along to get along. We're adults living in a hard world, and we all have our own opinion of what is right and wrong. For some of us it's faith based, for others, it's more secular. But this is an OT topic, and as long as people are trying to be civil and not insulting, I don't see a problem with the debate.

All that video does is illuminate our arguement.

The people that Ms. Maddow referenced had dedicated in most cases their adult lives to their causes. It is insulting to their efforts that some guy named Obama, who never was able to bring peace to his own city of Chicago, let alone the world, would be bestowed such an honor on the same basis of justification.

Again, I go back to Reagan. He made his famous sppech at the Brandenburg Gate in 1987. Here is an excerpt from one of the great political speeches of our time:

We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall![ - Ronald Reagan

The wall fell in November of 1989. Based on Ms. Maddow's astute observations (parroted by Flip), President Ronald Reagan should've received his Nobel Peace Prize back in 1979. I believe Nancy is still waiting.

But this clown gets one. Absurd. Not to mention insulting.

There's an interesting subgroup of Americans that puzzle me. They celebrated because the Olympics wouldn't be in the U.S. and they were outraged that their president would be receiving a prestigious international honor. If I'd been asked a year ago who I thought that subgroup would be comprised of, I would have gotten the answer way wrong.

I still get chills from that Reagan speech. He is a hard act to follow (although I think Obama is a better actor than Reagan). I'm sure there will never be another Ronald Reagan in my lifetime. I feel very fortunate to have attended a siminar where he was the guest speaker. What an amazing man!!!
