Thanks even more for reminding me that Arnica is for brusies... we have both arnicare gel and traumeel... using them for muscle aches, usually after faulty workouts.

Iprof - so glad to hear you are ok. Yikes! No doubt you will have a few days of new aches and pains.
Highway accidents are one of my irrational (maybe not?) fears.
Just this morning we drove down from the NY Finger Lakes region in pouring rain and I was zoning out (as the passenger) thinking what if that car in front of us hydro-planes and then my mind raced from there for about another 50 miles.

There was hardly time to consider worrying that I was getting back on the same road within hours of the crash - home was 400 miles away and I needed to get there. Surprisingly, only once did I feel a little panic over the traffic as we journeyed home in a rental.

So far, what we have been told is that South Carolina insurance law declares that wrecked vehicle repair estimates that are 75% of book value consider the vehicle "totaled" and sold for salvage. That appears to be the case here. At this time we do not know if the repairs are more cosmetic or actually major repairs. The high costs are because new BMW parts are all that are available for those repairs. I hope I have that right....Carolyn wrote:I hope you will let us know what happens w/ the appraisal.
So possible options are being considered - new car (not first choice), used bimmer (not very appealing), be the high salvage bid and get it repaired (desirable if not too complicated). I'll let you know what we decide.

It is the attachment to this car (not particularily liking the style of the new ones) and knowing the care that this one has had that will be one influence in the decision. Kind of like pets, there has been a red convertible hanging around the house for most of the past 40 years; I don't think we are ready to do without one. We really liked THIS one. The damages related to safety are still to be assessed and are, of course, very important.

Our car is totaled and will be sold as salvage.
We are looking at the "previously owned" option to replace it. Our Z4 was in mint condition. Book value was roughly $20,000.
The known repairs to the exterior met the 75% of book value amount without consideration of any possible bent frame or engine block type damages, so other possible damages/repairs remained unknowns.
We were told that a salvaged car that we had rebuilt would be have to be retitled and would be worthless (with Carfax, etc., as SJfrom NJ said). The most outstanding reason for not rebuilding it was that it would not be insurable after such repairs following having been salvaged.
It has been a long depressing week with more psychological pain than physical. Our insurance company has been supportive and responsive which helps.
We will be okay... and we feel so, sooo lucky.

Thanks for letting us know. I was afraid it would be totaled but it sounds like its' the 'best' outcome, all things considered.
I have been keeping my husband updated on your situation and he's not a fan of the new Z's either...no rag top! BOO!
Ours is a 2006, that was previously owned. The original owner kept it for a whopping 8 months putting less than 1000 miles on it. We were looking for new at the time, when the salesman piqued my husbands curiosity by telling him he had this Z4/M that was less than a yr, etc. He brought it home that day! BMW makes a great extension to the warranty of the previously owned.
He thinks there are quite a few of the former designs out there that you will have good luck in finding one of them. You have a very good chance of finding a new last year model also!
