taxi fares

Post by Andrea266 »

I am hoping all you wonderful island visitors can help me with this question.
My grandfather is coming to St. John in June for my wedding, and is debating on whether to rent a car or just use taxis. He said he called St. John Car Rental and got a rate of $60 for a smaller car and $100 for an Explorer (these rates are per day). He was also less than impressed with the level of customer service.
My grandfather and his wife are staying at Lavender Hill, and he says the only place they'll need a ride to is Gibney for my wedding, Skinny Legs and the Westin (where my uncle and his family are staying). Does anyone know approxmiate taxi fares for these places from town? (they have no problem walking from Lavender Hill to town and back).
Any help you can offer will be much appreciated! Thanks everyone.

Go to St. John (at the top of this website) and go to the pull down menu and find Taxi Rates.

we just returned from the a stay at the Westin a few weeks ago. This will fly in the face of what a lot a people think about St John but if I had it to do over again I would not have rented a car for the week. We rented a Jeep Liberty from Conrad Sutton in Cruz Bay. They were great to deal with and the parking was convient when we were downtown but we were with a large group and we usually took a cab as a group to travel. We used the car to go to the stores and do a little sight seeing one day and other than that we were in cabs. I have the number of a good cab owner that we used several times during our stay. His name is Abba Meade he owns a large cab/truck that will accomidate up to eighteen people. We used hime serveral time thoughout the week. He is very profesional never tried to rip us off and was great at setting up to drop us off at a given time then returning at a specified time to pick us back up for the return trip. His phone numbers are 340-643-6246 Cell or 240-779-4779 . As said above the rates are per person plus luggage and controlled by the government.
Hope this helps and good luck with the wedding.

I stayed at the Westin a few weeks ago and we did not rent a car. We were a group of 4 and what we collectively payed for taxis, I'm sure was more than what we would have paid to rent a car. (We went to a different beach every day and into town every night. We were definitely not as adverturous as we would have been, had we rented a car.) From the Westin to most beaches was $7.00 - $9.00 per person, each way and the fare to town from the Westin was $4.00 per person each way. Based on their limited needs, I would recommend they skip the car rental. And on a positive note, the real beauty of taxis is not having to deal with parking.

Wow, thanks everyone for your input, I'll pass these messages on to my grandfather. He is now talking about renting a car for a few days and using taxis for the other few days.
Thanks again!
