Can I just vent
This is a sore subject with me.
When my daughter was married a couple of years ago, my husband and I both invited our coworkers.
So I mailed invitations to all of his, and got quick, enthusiastic replies. I hand delivered invitations to 7 of my coworkers and got...chirping crickets. Not ONE of them even had the courtesy to mark the invitation WILL NOT ATTEND and drop it on my desk.
I was saddened and embarassed to think that they probably were speculating among themselves how I probably invited them for the wedding gifts. I am not the most sociable person, but being snubbed like that still brings tears to my eyes when I think about it.
That was the day I decided to quit that job.
Sometimes I wonder, if people had a BBQ or dinner party, and some folks didnt RSVP but then showed up, would the host be gracious and squeeze them in, or tell them with much regret that because they didn't answer, they were not planned for? And Bye bye!

Had to chime in on this one, I have a raw nerve about this subject and will vent with all you if you don't mind
. We get together with my husband's family every year for different holidays, rotating it around. One brother has a wife, 2 adult stepkids, MIL, DIL, and 2 grandkids, so there's a total of 8 possibly just on this one group. I never know how many will be coming from this group-they never can give me a count ahead of time. So one Christmas eve we're hosting, it's about an hour before dinner is ready, space is at a premium, and they call me and tell me her family's in town (never met them) and so she'll be bringing 5 more in addition to the initial 8 that they never fully confirmed!!!!
Ok, Christmas spirit and all, but come on! So now I do summer BBQ's where it's all outside and I don't have to worry about whether or not I have enough turkey to feed everyone. Whew, thanks for letting me vent!

sounds like I hit a hot button.
the more I think about the whole thing....I never invite people so they will "invite me back"...but the worst offenders are the ones who never have parties or even people over, so why am I inviting them if they cant even give me a small courtesy.
the list will be differerent next year.

This happens to us all the time. Well, to be fair, it is always the same people. Nonetheless, it is annoying and selfish, IMO. We are big fans of the Evite - just very easy to coordinate a party. We are coming up on Ella's 1st birthday, and the same people haven't responded, and I suspect they won't until about the day before, if at all...And no, I don't talk politics at my parties (well, unless someone asks
) .
Anyway, I feel ya. Very frustrating!

My invitation must have been lost in the mail, but just so you won't be stressed over it, the eighty four of us won't be able to make it - this time.

Come see us!

I really like having parties and we usually manage to have at least one/year with 80+ people, and several others with smaller groups too. I'm lucky with those parties that everyone brings something and we are all over-fed and over-beveraged!
But I've had my share of non-RSVPers too and I think that people who don't host often (or ever) just don't get what it's like to be the planner. My DH's siblings always leave it up to me or my MIL to host the holiday dinners, and I've had so many times when they show up late, don't reply, show up with extra people, cancel at the last minute, etc. I think I'm sensitive to it because my family always makes a big deal of holidays... fancy tables set up, lots of carefully prepared food, etc. My MIL waits until everyone gets there to set the table and then throws some cheese and crackers out. So her kids (other than DH) just don't get the whole plan in advance thing.
