John carries all the snorkel gear, sunblock, and cameras in the medium size wide-mouth llbean tote bag. I wear a backpack that contains our water, journal, fish guide, books, and extra t-shirts. carrying a tote bag makes me feel crooked--I prefer to wear a backpack. Of course, I use a backpack at home too, no purses for me.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

canucknyc,
Sorry you didn't have any luck at TJMaxx, but I like the one you found at Target . . . and you can't beat the price!

After I gave into temptation and ordered one of the design it yourself totes from LL Bean, the Lands End catalog arrived. It has some great looking totes at better prices, See link

I know you've all probably found the "best" but I have found that one of the best tings for a beach bag is a diaper bag with all the little inside and outside pockets to store all the goodies that get buried at the bottom and it's usually water, sand and whatever-proof with nice long handles that work over your shoulder. My son gave me one years ago that he found at the Coach outlet and I wouldn't trade it for anyting!
