Rum Makes You Dumb - Part III - Cherry Red Tortola

Post by LandLockedBeachLover »

Saturday, Aug 8 – Day Four – Drink Count (let’s call it 15) – Diversions from my uber-itinerary (0. This is a first.)

So I had expertly planned for a day trip to Tortola (Cane Garden Bay) on a Saturday since the last ferry back out of Road Town is at 5:15, instead of the normal weekday time of 2-ish. Thus making this somewhat long trip by taxi, ferry, taxi and foot a little bit more worthwhile :) . We were planning to drive to Charlotte to catch the 8:30 ferry, but the concierge desk recommended that we take a taxi since there isn’t a good, safe place to park near the Tortola ferry dock. Good call.

We arrive around 8:10 or so, and we purchase our $50 r/t ferry ticket from Native Son, which includes customs fees. Not too awful. We fill out our customs forms at the desk, while thoroughly annoying the clerks in a hunt for a pen :x (which we have forgotten to bring). The ferry is right on time, so here we go!

A friend travels with us…

Image

We stop at West End, Tortola first to quickly (5 min) drop off those folks. Quick shot of the Jolly Roger (no time today, but the best Bushwackers around - - trust me).

Image

About 50 min in total transit from CA, and we arrive in Road Town, Tortola! We grab a taxi immediately for Cane Garden Bay, the self-named “jewel of the BVI”. You think the roads in STJ are tiny, steep and curvy? BAH! Try a taxi ride in Tortola!!
Somewhat dizzy, we arrive at Cane Garden Bay to an almost deserted, large span of beautiful beach. We set up our gear in a nice nook near the facilities and break open a Corona to toast our successful trip “over the river and through the woods to Cane Garden Bay we go”. Apparently, we just missed some sort of a festival period in Tortola. Which apparently means that everyone on the island is holed up in their houses, hung over and sleeping; unable to crawl to a beach 8) . It was DEAD! Which was absolutely fine by us.

Cane Garden Bay is a long, beautiful beach with many cool little restaurants, drink huts, beach volleyball nets, music, trampolines in the water, unique stores and apparently great snorkeling too (we were too tired). If you have kids, they might enjoy a day here to have something to do other than snorkel.

Image

We had a wonderful chicken roti at this great little restaurant (sorry I can’t remember the name of the place), along with 3 (yes 3, stop judging) glasses of chard. :P A friend of ours under the table, who also enjoyed the chicken roti.

Image

I was feeling pretty good by the time the afternoon rolled around. Like I said we had great intentions of snorkeling, but we were just thoroughly having a good, lazy time in the water. You know how it is. “Hanging” on your significant other in the water, drink in hand. Floating and smiling, not a care in the world. This continues on for a couple hours, way past the time in which we told the taxi driver to pick us up. He finds us on the beach. Yes, we’re the drunk ones with stupid a#@ smiles on our faces. So we dry off, pack up and head back to Road Town.

Well, a stop in Road Town is simply not complete without a stop in Pusser’s for an original pirate’s rum painkiller(i.e. Pusser’s rum that will put hair on your chest). So “cherry” wanted one of their shot glasses, but in order to do that we needed to empty the painkiller shot that was in it. So we did.

Image

In addition to this, I downed 2 painkillers of my own. That contained…………a cherry………as an accoutrement. Oh YEAH :D . I almost forgot that I have to do something for BevM! So there’s no better time than the present, says an intoxicated self! HERE YOU GO BEVM!

Image

Note: One cherry in each nostril, and holding it there for a pic, makes it somewhat difficult to BREATHE since you are sucking to hold those puppies in there. And then snorting an inordinate amount of cherry juice in the process since stuffing them in there is a futile effort. And once cherries fall from one’s nostrils due to need to breathe, seeping said cherry juice all over mouth and chin, thus effectively drinking the snot-ridden cherry juice that has emanated from nostrils. “Hot”, says hubs. “Hot.”

Image

Needing to make my egress from the show that I have apparently given to those fellow bar-hounds at Pusser’s  (I do apologize to whomever you are), the ladies decided to do a bit (30 min) of shopping while the men imbibe in a cigar and further painkillers. So, the four that arrive in the ferry terminal area for the 5:15 ferry back to Charlotte are in RARE FORM. Drink count is … a lot. So we root around in our gear in search of peanuts, chips or whatever we can stuff in our faces most quickly. “I wases so hungdry. I arm starv-ING. Holy carap this tast-es so gowd darm gooood.” Can you read drunken-ese? I hope so.

"Cherry" with his better-half's sun hat...

Thank God we could use the ferry ride to sober up. A bit. After arrival, and another quick THANK GOD that we didn’t drive here from the Marriott - - we decide we are only in good enough shape to shower up and hang out in our room for dinner / drinks (read: not embarrass ourselves again in public  ). So we carved up salami, cheeses, crackers and broke into our rum and wine for more late night festivities. I have completely lost the drink count here. Let’s call it 15 for the day. And I am a notorious sand-bagger

Tomorrow – our hiking adventure in St. John at Leinster, Caneel beaches and the Beach Bar for the Sunday forum gathering!

Sounds like a fun trip - I'm loving your report and my drink count is always very similar to yours. Looks like you've done BevM proud :)

We ate lunch at that same restaurant and I don't know the name. There is a rum distillery nearby that we had fun at. We loved the dogs there - one was our favorite but the others dominated him. I hope he's still there and alive.

Look forward to the rest of your report.

Nancy B - YES! That poor dog was pushed around by 2 other male dogs on the beach, and one of them even pee'd on her! I guess marking his territory...
