Can anyone tell me about Barbados?

A place for members to talk about things outside of Virgin Islands travel.

Can anyone tell me about Barbados?

Post by alw1977 »

I've always been intruiged by Barbados, but was wondering if anyone has been and can give me their thoughts on the general vibe, activities, people, food, etc. I know a lot of people use Barbados as a gateway to get to Grenada, Bequia, etc..., but I wondered if Barbados has a lot to offer in its own right, besides just being busy.

My husband and I rode out a hurricane in Barbados 2 years ago  . Yep, and you're right - we were using it as a gateway to Bequia. We spent 2 nights there, in St. Lawrence Gap. The staff at our hotel were super nice. Once the hurricane was over, we saw just a little bit of the area - beaches were pretty (lots of sea turtles), but more active than St John.
We enjoyed the food in Barbados a lot, as well as the Banks Beer! We had a surprisingly good curry dish at an Irish pub in the gap. LOL
You will find that a lot of Brits vacation there due to the favorable exchange rate. Other than that, don't have much info since we were unable to explore more.

Last month at the DMV, a woman ahead of me in line told another couple not to go there because "It's a police state run by...you know...them".

Yup...it's NC and it's Racist!

Of course, this woman also declared shortly thereafter that she was afraid of collies or something equally as idiotic.

I have nothing else to offer.

Waterguy, that's my ONLY memory of Barbados. I also got hammered on the Jolly Roger. We were on a cruise. I was dancing on the deck of the Jolly Roger and when we got back on the ship and went in to the dining room for food to soak up the rum everyone near the windows started applauding!!! Apparently I gave them quite a show!!!

The best thing about Barbados is the culture. I think the country is celebrating 26/27 years of independence.
The food is very interesting, everything Bajan begins with Pumpkin.

We have always stayed at Almond Beach club an AI. Very nice in my opinion, Adult only place with a sister the Almond beach village 30 minutes away. Fun island to explore. We stay far away from the main city, Bridgetown except for friday nights a must do is Oistens.

I can't help, but I did just see this on CNN Travel and said, wait someone was asking for info on Barbados. I don't think it has what you are looking for but doesn't hurt looking anyway.

We were there once on a cruise stop and then returned to spend a week at The Crane for an anniversary. Can't tell you too much about the island as a whole - wasn't that impressed with Bridgetown and we just kind of plopped ourselves at The Crane and mellowed out on the gorgeous pink sand beach there. Hubs had reserved one of the rooms with a private pool off the balcony in the residences but there was some kind of a mix-up with our res and none were available when we arrived. They fell all over themselves at their mistake and did try to make it up to us by only charging us for a room but upgrading us to a large, beautiful suite in the historic hotel section, though, and sending some lovely flowers and goodies to our room and giving us dinner and a room service credit. The accommodations and service were top notch. There are several restaurants there, all pricey, but the food is wonderful. After looking at the food and bev prices we felt relieved that they had lost our res for that residence room. This was not our usual type of vacation but it was nice to be pampered. I'd recommend The Crane but it is a large property in development. The construction was kind of slowed down while we were there and it didn't bother us. That pink sand beach is just beautiful - I'd go back just for that.

Maybe this will help. From a 2008 National Geographic article rating island destinations:

Barbados
Score: 62

"Densely populated, with some of the highest visitor arrivals in the region. Although very clean, demand on marine resources has led to over-fishing, including the flagship flying fish. Oral and other traditions are fading, or becoming watered down and commercialized for visitors."

"Bajan culture is strong and evident, and locals relate warmly to visitors. However, the volumes of cruise visitors overwhelm Bridgetown and bring far fewer benefits than stay-over visitors. The agricultural landscape is aesthetically appealing."

"Tourism is well-organized, with the populace sensitive to its economic importance. Barbadians are conscious of their environment. There is recycling of plastic and glass bottles. The beach areas are kept meticulously clean and the water pristine."

"Away from the tourist areas, Barbados offers unbelievable scenery, isolated beaches, fascinating culture, and a rich history. The future is likely to continue submerging the real Barbados to bring in more seekers of beaches, golf, and winter homes."
When you find yourself in a hole.... quit digging.
