Who has been to Cozumel? Looking for resources, websites

Post by PA Girl »

Who has been to Cozumel? I remember someone posted a trip report but can't remember who.

My mom and her boyfriend are planning a November trip and Mom is a reader/researcher and is looking for book or website recommendations.

I have only visited Cozumel on a cruise ship stop. I can state that it is the only caribbean destination that I will not return to. While there we had our rental car broken into and all of the belongings we had with us and had purchased, stolen. That was not the part that soured me completely. The Police did not want to respond or file a report. A report was finally filed at my insistance (for insurance purposes). The notebook that the officer used was literally a mickey mouse notebook. My insurance agent later had difficulty obtaining anything from the Cozumel police.

Here's a link to the trip report I posted here: http://www.virgin-islands-on-line.com/f ... ht=cozumel

Here are some of the web sites I used for planning purposes:

We enjoyed it a lot. Like anywhere else, some people love it, some hate it, and a lot are in between.

Sea-nile and I were there on a dive trip in April and had a great time.

I'm not so sure I would vacationing there if I didn't dive or snorkel, but maybe a combination of Playa del Carmen (or other place on riviera Maya) and Cozumel would be good. Been to Playa once and also liked it.

When it comes to books I always find Lonely Planet guidebooks the best.

We were there for a week this past June. Feel free to PM me with any specific questions...or post them here, heck, it is the off topic board.

Trip Adviser has a very active Cozumel forum. I thought it was a good resource.

Cozumel...most favorite place for us in Mexico. Don't be afraid to venture into the center of town, enjoy the local restaurants and events, it's safe. Met many folks from Europe, Canada, etc (lots of foreign languages spoken while walking around town) We snorkel, don't dive, but the snorkeling is very good. Boats will take you out to good snorkeling spots, or you can just go in at any point. You will see divers 50 feet under you, in very clear water. Very friendly island. Just mellow in and enjoy. We didn't feel the need to see Playa or any other destination while there. Check the cruise ship schedule and stay out of town when many ships are in port, just like in STT. Enjoy!
I was a travel agent when I went. But now, I use AAA and they are great. It's worth joining and visiting one of their offices if you have one close by.

Thanks for the information. I sent mom a link to this thread.

They went to Playa last year. Can't remember exactly where but they were close to Tulum. They liked it but missed the ease of STJ-like snorkelling, which is why I think they are thinking Cozumel for this trip.

I have been to Cozumel a few times, but it has been 2 years since the last visit. I don't dive, but do snorkel. They have several off the beach snorkel spots, but they do not have the beaches that St. John has. The island is small, quiet and very nice.

This is the board I use to use, looks like it is still active.

It was great for diving. Where we stayed did not have a sandy beach though. But on the East side there are some nice beaches. I liked it, but like STJ better.
