Buying Liquor

Post by mah »

Leaving next week for STT. Changing flights in SJU to EWR going home. Can liquor be delivered/brought inside security at STT, so it can be carried into the aircraft cabin rather than be put in checked luggage?
If not how are the prices in SJU. Looking forward to wonderful week in STT. Mary Ann

MaryAnn,
I think they will make you check it, due to the new liquid regulations. Good luck, and have a great trip!

By the way, can someone remind me how many bottles of Cruzan I can take home? Is it 6 per person? Will I get hassled if I have 12 bottles (6 for my hubby & 6 for me - really all presents) all in my cooler on the way back?

CG - You can each bring back 5 fifths of alcohol, plus an addition bottle if it's local rum, so the two of you can have 12 bottles combined...

I've heard that booze (unlike food) is relatively inexpensive on STJ. Can anyone elaborate on this?

Thanks, as always! :)

If you live in Texas, you can only bring in one litre per person. When you arrive at customs, they do ask you how much you have. I asked the customs person once if they really do confiscate and destroy, and she said yes. These are the rules from Mexico, not sure about coming in to Texas from a US territory.

I just got back from the liquor store. Finally found some Cruzan Rum around here at $10-$13 per bottle. I don't know how much tax on liquor in NJ but here we pay about 1.5 to 2X the price as in the USVI. It sounds like a good bargain and it might be for some things, say 5 bottles of Grey Goose or Dom but after the liquid carry-on ban I have decided I am not saving that much money. If I bought 6 bottles of Cruzan, I would only save about $54 and I have to worry that the bottles might break. I also found out that I can order any items not in stock here and pick up at the state store. We are not allowed delivery to our homes here.
And PA is the biggest consumer of wine in the US and still-no wine club delivery to front door allowed-dumb!
Time to go have a drink :D
When will I see St John again?

We brought home 2 boxes (one box per adult) of rum, vodka, etc.(5 bottles in each box...my husband wanted to "stop the bleeding" so he wouldn't let me fill the boxes with just one more bottle, which he regretted later) purchased at the STT airport. They wrapped each bottle in bubble wrap and secured the boxes quite well. All for $118--I thought it was a good deal.

We checked it with the luggage. Both boxes made it back to Philly with no scratches, bumps, or bruises. Very easy process...will do it again next trip.
