Cooperstown

We're heading to Cooperstown Labor Day weekend with my sister and BIL. WooHoo!

I know my BIL and I could spend the whole weekend in the Hall of Fame museum, but hubby and my sister will have enough after the normal few hours. (ok - 10 minutes will be my sister's max! :)

Any of the other museums worth taking in? Any good golf courses in the vicinity (we're hackers). Any other suggestions - we'll arrive late Friday afternoon and leave early Monday morning.

How about restaurants? It's our anniversary so we'd like someplace nice, good food but not too $$$$.

woohoo!
here's one tip if you don't know it. you can enter the Hall at night after a certain hour (maybe 6 or 7pm) and your ticket is still good for the next day.

I did go to another museum but the name is escaping me right now. As is the restaurant I liked.

The Ommegang Brewery is in the area so that's another possible stop.

Google is a good thing!
This is where we ate but it was many years ago so who knows now!

Also we went to Fenimore Art Museum. Worth a visit.

Where are you staying?

I didn't know that tip - maybe we'll go in Friday night and go back on Saturday.

I just know we're staying in town, he hasn't given me all the details. He only told me where we were going because he knows my sister and nieces can't keep secrets.

I just know he won't do much research and I like to be prepared :)

Too bad you couldn't make it next weekend to see Jim Ed Rice FINALLY get his due as the most dominant and feared hitter of his era.

I wish I could help you out here, but I haven't been since I was probably 10 or 11 years old. Can't wait to bring my kids in a few years though.

Have fun!!

In case you're interested, the Soccer Hall of Fame is in nearby Oneonta.

I guest played with a team from PA a few years ago in a tournament there, and if you're in to soccer you owe it to yourself to check the HOF out if you're ever in the area.
Come see us!

janet - your sister may be surprised. The baseball HOF is exceedingly well done, enough so that the non-baseball fan may even enjoy. Hopefully the crowds wont be too bad.

augie - I'm bummed that we rode by the basketball HOF in Springfield MA this weekend and I forgot to build in time to visit. I wouldnt mind seeing the soccer HOF too as I am that rare American bird that enjoys that game. Saw many a Cosmos game back in the '70s when they could compete with any team on earth and when they outdrew the Yankees and Mets.

Sox: Jim Rice = something we agree on! Two words: ABOUT TIME! About time sportswriters got off their high horse and corrected this egregious omission.

jmq - I have read that non-baseball fan(atic)s do enjoy the HOF museum.

Sox - I won't be in Cooperstown for the inductions this weekend, but I will be at Fenway wearing my Rice shirt.

Augie - sorry, no soccer fans in this group.

One of my favorite memories of Jim Ed was that day in September 1986, when he had his hat stolen at Yankee Stadium (known by Red Sox fans as "The Toilet" - sorry SJ - but really, that place was a disaster!).

Anyway, Jim went running up into the stands, found the punk that jacked his hat, got it back as the kid was stuffing it down his pants, and then proceeded to calmly head back to play his position in left field. I believe Clemens gave him a hand that day as wel. I was 9 years old, and that left a lasting impression on me.

Love Jim Rice. Truly, an all-time great (no matter what the media thinks).

You know, everyone likes to blame Buckner for that one...Never mind that it was Calvin Schiraldi who gave up something like seven straight hits with 2 out in the ninth! Or that It was Bob "Steamer" Stanley that threw a 2-2 wild pitch to Mookie Wilson that allowed the tying run to score BEFORE the ball rolled through Buckner's legs.

Again a reflection of how the media shapes the public perception of an individual. The national media laid all of the blame at the feet of Bill Buckner...Who himself was a GREAT player - especially dating back to his early days with the Dodgers when he was actually a big-time base stealer.

And a good trivia question...

Who was playing left-field on April 8 1974 for the Los Angeles Dodgers when Hank Aaron's 715th homerun landed in the Dodgers' bullpen at the old Atlanta Fulton County Stadium???

Bill Buckner.

SJfromNJ wrote:Soxy - That would be the bottom of the 10th. I have that inning embeded on my mental hard drive.

You would also have to partially blame the manager for having Buckner in the game then. He could barely bend at the knees by that point in his career.
Yes, bottom of 10th. Dave Henderson's home run came in the top half of the 10th. Man, talk about a clutch hitter.

As for McNamara...He has been criticized for that. He said though that the reason he had Buckner out there was that he wanted him to be on the field when the Sox won the series. Dave Stapleton was his caddy at first base that year. Again though...Buckner was the scapegoat for guys like Schiraldi and The Steamer.

Eteched in my mind was the way Dave Henderson recorded the second out of that inning on a fly ball to centerfield...Just about going down to one knee after he caught the ball...Then the scoreboard at Shea displaying the now ominous "Congratulations Boston Red Sox: 1986 World Series Champions".

Then all hell broke loose. And to boot, the Sox had a lead late in Game 7.

Oh well...2004 and 2007 have helped to ease the pain.
