Underwater camera case for Fuji finepx 550

Post by susan & herb »

I was on the other board VON and they mentioned the Aquapac underwater camera case which looks like a soft case as apposed to the hard cases. I found it on LL Bean's website as a new item which is the same model as the one Aquapac is selling on their site. The small case is $30.00.
Has anyone used this underwater and will it protect my camera? Fuji does not make a waterproof case for my model camera and I really don't want to spend a fortune, but am concerned about H2O.

S&H - the Aquapac is actually a pretty well engineered product but when I bought one for our first trip in 05 I found my Canon Powershot A80 is apparently VERY sensitive to the extra humidity created in the bag and kept shutting down. I was also pretty much unable to use the LCD screen to see what I was framing, although using an LCD screen in a hardcase is difficult too. Also the bag seemed to play tricks with the lens and auto focus if you werent mindful of keeping it stretched across the lens.

It finally dawned on me the last day of the trip to try my older 2mp simple Kodak camera that I let my daughter use and that worked much better, so it depends on the camera a bit in terms of compatibility with the bag.

I got the Canon hardcase housing for the 06 trip with excellent results and I have the Aquapac for other situations at home and travel involving bad weather or protective use on the beach for an extra camera or Ipod etc.

Since there is no hardcase for your camera, you can try the Aquapac, but get extra silica packs to put in the bag to control humidity build up, and when taking photos underwater, try to keep the bag stretched across the lens as best a possible.

Get an extra memory card so you can take lots and lots of pictures at your cameras highest resolution (to allow cropping) because you will "miss" some shots (framing, focus, exposure problems). But note that post trip software tweaking is also needed to reduce the blues and make the colors pop on underwater shots, so dont be discouraged when you review them in the camera after you take it out of the bag.

Thanks for the info. on the case. I will have to remember to stretch the bag over the lens.
I used a Kodak underwater cheapo last year. I was just thrilled that I got pictures out of it, so I was trying to kind of upgrade a little as I am really a novice.
My older son used to take sports pictures, i.e. surfing in Hawaii etc, but he really has no patience for my "pictures". He does not even consider them worth printing.
By the way, where are you in NJ, as we are in Morris County.
