Robin's Trip Report Part 3
Tuesday dawned cloudy and windy. With Jeannie’s sore ankle, we postponed thoughts of going to more remote beaches and headed for comfortable Hawksnest. On the way, we were passing Jumbie when we saw that one of the coveted four parking spaces was available, so we made the quick decision to try this beach I’d heard so much about from the cognoscenti.
THE WHOKNOWSWHATI? DON’T GET TOO BIG FOR YOUR BRITCHES, WORD BOY.
No, forum, I meant it as a compliment! If you want to know something about St. John, someone on this forum can get you the answer.
HERE’S SOMETHING WE’D LIKE TO KNOW. HOW DO WE GET SUCKERED INTO DOING THIS?
Okay, so Jumbie. A pretty and private beach, but I wasn’t as taken with it as I’d expected to be. In fact, I’d have to say it was my least favorite of the beaches we visited all week. Didn’t help that I was just hanging out in the water when I stepped on a pointed rock that sent a shooting pain into my foot. I figured it was a stone bruise, but when I got out I saw that it had actually punctured my foot.
AHA. THE JUMBIES GOT YOU FOR NOT LIKING THEIR BEACH.
Maybe so. The wound, which sounds so dramatic, was right in the center of my instep, so there was no way to avoid putting pressure on it. So Jeannie limped the rest of the week on her left foot and I limped on my right. We were quite the picture walking down the street together.
WEREN’T YOU WORRIED ABOUT TETANUS? LOCKJAW? INSANITY?
No worries about the first two, and a little too late for the last. The injuries to Ma and Pa Pitiful did cut back on our beach time, though. We headed back to the villa for Jeff’s ritual nap, and my ritual milk and Oreo’s (No. 44 on the list of Great American Things – http://americanthings.wordpress.com).
DUDE. LET IT GO.
Heh. Anyway, after we rested from, uh, resting, we headed into Cruz Bay for our shopping time. At a jewelry shop on the upper level of Mongoose Junction that I know by location, not name, Jeannie got a pair of Katya earrings to go with her ring (2006) and necklace (2008). We then headed to St. John Spice (missed Ruth, but she told me that she wasn’t likely to be there in late afternoons) where we bought our T-shirts and souvenirs. Finally we made our way over to the Lime Inn for dinner.
WHY THE LIME INN?
I don’t know, there’s just something comfortable about the place. Starts with the the owner/host (I wish I knew his name) who always greets us like we’re long-lost friends. Or someone important, like RickG. That’s a special talent. The ambiance is nice and the food is good. Let’s be honest, it’s not one of the culinary hot spots on the island. But it’s consistently good, and never underestimate the importance of consistency.
LIKE YOU’RE CONSISTENTLY LONG-WINDED.
As you consistently point out. Jeff and I got Coquilles St. John, described on the menu as “Scallops sauteed in a cheesy tarragon cream sauce, topped with bread crumbs and finished off in the oven.” Jeannie had a mixed vegetable quiche, and Teresa had peel and eat shrimp. We all enjoyed our dinners and left happy. The total for the four of us with two drinks and tip was $130. We made the unpleasant drive back across Centerline to the villa, where we indulged in a guilty pleasure.
WHAT – STRIP POKER? SKINNY DIPPING? TELL, TELL!
Uh, no. American Idol.
I DON’T KNOW, DOG. IT WAS JUST OKAY FOR ME FOR YOU, JUST KEEPING IT REAL.
Called it an early night. Woke up Wednesday morning to a cloudy and windy day.
THAT’S WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT TUESDAY.
I know. And it’s a sneak preview of Thursday, too. After a typical breakfast (Me – butter rum muffin from Starfish, J&T – something with bacon every day, I know, because I ate whatever was left, Jeannie - a slice of toast with butter) and lots of coffee, we decided to head for Maho. It’s a pretty beach, though the water everywhere we went wasn’t as warm as it had been on our two previous trips. The first time was early June, last time was mid-May, this time the first of May. Does a couple of weeks earlier make a difference? Or was it the constant clouds? Or could it have been all that rain?
IS THIS A METEOROLOGICAL INQUIRY OR A RHETORICAL QUESTION?
Serious, I guess.
WELL, THEN, LOOK AT THE COMMENTS BELOW. AT LEAST ONE OF US WILL HAVE THE ANSWER. YOU CALLED US THE COGNOSNOTTY, REMEMBER?
Thanks. So we had a relaxing day at the beach, and that’s all I can remember. J&T snorkeled, said they saw a lot of fish, but no turtles or rays. We did see one interesting thing.
AT LAST.
A young woman must have been training for a triathlon. She entered the water in front of the building on the beach, swam out to the boat markers, all the way to the rocks on the right, back to the middle, back to the rocks, to the middle, and in. She may done another circuit, I don’t know.
WE CAN’T HELP. WE FELL ASLEEP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARAGRAPH.
That night was pizza night at the Donkey Diner, so we carried home a large Hawaiian.
SOMEONE WITH A BODY LIKE ISRAEL KAMAKAWIWO’LE?
Good one. No, a large Hawaiian pizza. Also a hamburger, mushroom, olives, and extra cheese. It’s cash only there, but I think both pies came to $40. I’ve now had pizza at Café Roma, Ronnie’s, and Donkey Diner, and they were all fine. But I don’t think I’d go back to any of them if they were here at home. I like my pizza thin crust, sort of like Patsy’s Pizza in New York, no. 52 on Great American Things.
OH NO YOU DI’INT!
Let’s look at some pictures while you cool down…

Your reports are very entertaining! I doubt that it compares to New York but The Cruz Bay Pizza Shop in Wharfside has a very good thin crust pizza if you are on that side of the island. We paid $20 for a medium with several toppings. We actually didn't eat it right when we got it. We threw it in the oven on a high temp later and it was really good.
Going "home" again October 26th!

Bob: Wow, Robin in NC is clearly the cognoscenti for the embellishment of the mundane.
Anita: Oh yea, he can also make a relaxing and fairly uneventfully day on STJ sound wonderful and entertaining.
Bob: Um, good point. I like that way his fun pictures help tell his story too!
Anita: Looking forward to the next report.

Mary Beth, I did some online research and found out that Jeannie's ring by Katya came from Best of Both Worlds. I was so proud of my sleuthing, and Jeannie said, "I could have told you that. It's on the box."
Brenda, that's a great idea about "rebaking" the pizza to get it crispier. I do that for reheated pizza here.
Bob & Anita, I love how you get in the spirit of my goofy style. One more report to go!
