Motion Sickness Wrist Bands

Post by flip-flop »

I know several people mentioned these back when I was lamenting the motion sickness issues of everyone in my family (except me). Hubby gets sea sick and both kids tend to get a bit carsick, esp. on STJ with the hills and curves etc.

Anyway, do the motion sickness wristbands work for kids? How do they work? Is there a particular brand to look for?

Sorry, I think this is my last, last minute question (if you count 16 days to go as last minute).

Are we there yet? Ok, that's my last last minute question. Really.

I think they are supposed to stop the motion signal from getting to the brain. They did not really work for me, but the patch worked real good. I get sea sick, but have now spent 3 week long trips on boats in the Virgin Islands without any problems. Boat sizes were 60 ft, 125 ft and 165 ft and two of the trips were in the winter when it is more choppy out. Side effects from the patch were mild, but you feel a little "slower" and just a little less energy. Also, your vision will get just slightly blury.
Not sure if they are ok for children or not, you may need to ask a doctor what they think you should do.

They put pressure on your wrist pressure points so the adult sized ones might be too loose for kids.

I have pretty small wrists and I find that they get uncomfortable after awhile so they'd probably be worse for a man.

I'd say they work ok. I still got sick on a boat with them, but it was a single hull and the water was kind of choppy.

I have this kind:

I got them at Wal-Mart for pretty cheap.

I think they are called Sea Bands. I found them at a pharmacy shop.

They supposedly work off of a pressure point on your wrist.

IMHO, the reason why they kinda, sorta work is cause your wrist hurts so gosh damn bad, that is takes your mind off your sick tummy!

Mrs Random would always end up leaning over the fantail feeding the fish. She got some sea bands in RI and they are miraculous. We ran down the Sakonnet River and fished stripers off the lighthouse and West Island. She never felt the slightest bit queasy.

Get them. They work.

When I went on the Wayward Sailor, Capt Phil put one of the bands on my wrist-for me it didn't work. Or at least I didn't get sick but was totally nauseous the whole time. I think he just put it on one hand. To top it off-this is weird-but for about a week or 2 afterwards I couldn't bend 2 of my fingers on the hand that the band had been on. It really was the weirdest thing-it was like a nerve got pinched or something somehow on that trip. Loved the snorkeling, Capt Phil etc, but messed up my fingers somehow :? Really strange....

I am the usual poster/promoter of the wrist bands. I have been wearing them since 1984 when I developed motion sickness while pregnant for my second. She also gets motion sickness & I have kept it since then...gotta love what those kids do you. She wore them when she was 2 (I finally figured out why she cried everytime we took a long ride in the car). I have used them on planes, cars & boats. You must wear one on each wrist. It works on an accupunture spot. I also put pressure on another moms wrists one time on a school bus trip when she started getting sick & it worked. The pills all make me sleep all day so can't do those. I have been on a boat that you can't even walk because of the rough seas & no problem.
