Quick trip report, December '06, photos & video

Post by lark22 »

I've been meaning to post these photos for ages. I don't have time to post a detailed trip report, but here are a few quick notes:

This was our first time on St. John, and we fell head-over-heels in love with the island. We've been to other spots in the Caribbean, but nothing else compares.

We mostly cooked in, so no restaurant reviews, really. Some good Joe's BBQ twice, though. And an excellent lunch at Vie's.

We really enjoyed Salt Pond Bay, Haulover South, and Little Lameshur for snorkeling -- and, of course, our favorite: Francis, where we saw turtles every single day (we mostly stayed to the righthand side of Francis). The key to seeing turtles there is to be patient, and to swim around in the right-hand side of the bay, away from the shore. One morning we saw four different turtles within 5 minutes. Just beautiful....! Other favorite snorkeling moments were the squid at Haulover South and an octopus under a ledge at Francis, and the small turtle who swam near us for a while at Trunk Bay.

Quick clip of a nurse shark at Francis Bay:

I have a few other video clips of snorkeling & beaches that I'll post when I finish them....

Hope you enjoyed this brief report & the pics! Sorry it's not more long-winded, but I figured that something is better than nothing ;) I love reading everyone else's reports, so I wanted to contribute!

Great pics. So where did you stay and when are you going back. You've been bitten by the STJ bug! You're right, there's nothing quite like it! :D

Hi Steve,

We used the great little Fuji F30 for the stills and the video clips -- I bought the underwater casing specifically made for the camera.

You don't have to post a trip report-- those fantastic photos speak VOLUMES! You MUST be a professional photog or an artist cause you've got an artists eye for sure.

Welcome to the Love City Love Club. I went down for the first time in 1995 and haven't been able to shake STJ since.

We're getting snow today in Northern Virgina. It's nice to see photos like yours to remind me that it's warm-- SOMEWHERE!!

Great work, thanks for sharing!

We were there in December '06 also. We were snorkeling Francis one day and there were tons of small fry in the water so visibility was bad. All of a sudden, my husband taps me and says, "I don't want to alarm you, but there is a shark in here." Well, I imagined a giant, ferosicous beast and high-tailed my butt back to shore. I bet it was that nurse shark! MUCH better than what I had imagined.

Thanks for all the nice feedback, guys....actually, my name is Sarah (people got confused because I replied to Steve's question above! :) )

And Gromit, you nailed it.....I actually am a professional photographer! I took these with my little point-and-shoot camera, though, so they're not an example of my best work. But when you have such a beautiful subject (St. John), you can't go wrong!

:)
