Spirit airlines

Post by DCphoto »

It is that time to start looking for air fares for our Dec. trip.
Has anyone taken Spirit airlines from Washington Reagan Airport to Ft. Lauderdale and St. Thomas? They are showing really good airfares right now.
In the past we have flown out of Dulles, but are rethinking because of the great fares right now.

Thanks!

Hey Sandy! When are you guys going to be down again?? We'll be down Dec 9-16.

I've never flown Spirit but I've always heard that you get what you pay for with them.

Double check what your needs are in terms of baggage also if you have to change your flight or have an issue you're pretty much SOL as the charges to make changes are more than the actual price of the tix. So make sure you get it right the first time.

Also here's a consumer affairs site with complaints about Spirit: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/travel/spirit.html

I am a going during that time as well....the Delta and AA flights (Cont too) are really, really cheap now, so if you could find a route on one of these carriers it may be worth your while.

Right now, from JFK, the Delta round trip is $307, with taxes, etc.

I'm waiting for the Jet Blue flights to open up thru SJU so we can leave in the afternoon, stay over in either SJU or STT and squeeze an extra half day out of it as we are only going for 4 days.

Yeah we booked our airline tix on Delta from IAD for around that same price (that was total including taxes BTW). They were ridiculously cheap-- at least cheaper than they have bene in a while.

I think the cheapest i have ever paid to STT was $278 (all inc.) And that was just crazy cheap. Anything around $300 and I'm thrilled.

Gromit, we are there the first week of Dec. not sure of the exact dates, they called it week 48 in the timeshare world. Sorry we are going to miss one another again.
I saw the little extra charges for checked bags on Spirit, but most airlines are playing that game now. When does Jet Blue start there trips to San Juan? I might have to look into that. I have a lot of friends in Puerto Rico I can visit for a day and go to the casinos. I got lucky there one year playing black jack and won over $800.00.

Just a note that in addition to your luggage cost, you also pay to chose your seat ahead of time. The aisle and window are a bit more expensive than a middle seat. If you don't have to sit with anyone in particular and will take the luck of the draw I think you forgo the charge. Just an FYI.

Hey Gromit,

I went over to National Harbor last week, it is a lot of fun over there. I bet in the summer it would be a great place to sit outside and have drinks. Let me know when you want to get together.

I'm flying Spirit in 5 weeks out of O'Hare, through Ft. Lauderdale. Tickets were incredibly cheap. We spent the $5 or $15 per ticket to pick our seats, but we're all carrying on, so the tickets were still cheap after paying for the seat selection. There are a few other strings discussing Spirit if you run a search.

Let me know how your flight was when you get back, I think we have some time to play around with this. The seat selection might come in handing though, my husband is 6'2. It might be worth paying for the selection.

Hi Sandy...we have flown Spirit to STT in the past w/ no problems. Originated from Atlantic City and thru Ft Lauderdale, no problems. The concourse in FLL is kinda crowded at times, annoying, but not a real problem. Yes, they charge for odds and ends likes seat reservations now...if you are getting a GREAT price you just have to take that into consideration of overall cost. As far as planes , pilots, and flight attendants, we have always been pleased w/ their performances...no real issues. I would agree to understand all of their policies, and if you get such a great deal go for it. We have flown the last few trips out of Newark on Continental, but it has nothing to do with poor service or difficulties w/ Spirit. We did get a GREAT price a little over $300 for that same time so there do seem to be some nice deals out there. Good luck!
