Villa Rental and Many ???? for newbie
Villa Rental and Many ???? for newbie
Hi everyone - You all have been so helpful. Even thought we will not be going till next June/July I am hunting a villa in St. John. We have two kids who will be 12 and 9 next year. Our wishes for our villa would be air conditioning in at least the bedrooms, pool, hot tub, good view and a good location for beaches, stores, etc. I know I am asking alot but any suggestions? Price range would be around $3,000 for the week. It will depend on how much airfare is. How far in advance do you book? Would 6 months before your trip be ok? As you can tell this will be our first time to STJ.
Ok more questions. Do we rent a vehicle in STT or STJ? Is it fairly east to get around the Island - my husband tends to get lost. We do have a GPS that we could bring.
Thanks again - I know I will have many many more questions. The villa search is the most important right now.

Its best for you to do your on research for villas thru the rental compay sites like ViVa, Destination St. John or Caribbean villas. There are more but I've used these folks in the past. Just check out their web sites and start looking thats the best approach.
You will probably want to stay closer to Cruz Bay as a first timer. Great Cruz Bay and Chocolate hole areas are best.
Your best bet to get your villa of choice is to book as far in advance as possible. I'm anal so we book a year out. Although some folks who like to fly by the seat of their pants get some great last minute deals.
As soon as I decide which villa I want and the dates I want to travel I start looking at airfare. We usually purchase anywhere from 9-6 months out for best prices.
Honestly a hot tub is pretty unnecessary for most folks as that time of year is pretty hot anyway. If you were traveling in December I could see the need because it's cooler. So you may want to rethink a hot tub as a "must have."
A pool to cool off is a must for some folks though including myself.
I prefer to rent my car on STJ for a variety of reasons. If your hubby gets lost then I wouldn't recommend driving on STT. Just get the ferry to STJ and rent there.
STJ is small. It's REALLY hard to get lost. Look at a map of the island and you'll see what I mean. A GPS would not only be unnecessary but kinda funny. Again, look at a map of the island and you'll get the joke.
Good luck!

*Another fine scatterbrained production
Check out Allesandra. I think it's a little more than $3,000 but it fits your other criteria. We stayed there and it a beautiful villa with a beautiful view. Chances are you won't be spending much time there anyway.

I would think 6 months would be far enough in advance especially since you're going during the slow season.
As for car rental, there are plenty of good places on STJ to rent from so I would suggest that. We've done it that way and it's pretty easy and convenient. The island is very easy to get around, just make sure you stay on the left! Most of the beaches you'll probably be going to are on the north shore and they are all on the same road. The island is small enough that even if you make a wrong turn or get lost, you're still not very far from your destination. Plus a little unintended exploring is fun!

One thing to keep in mind (so you don't get completely stressed out) is that most of the villas are very nice and chances are that the villa you choose will probably not make or break your experience on STJ. The real show-stoppers are the beaches and the people of St John. We've found that, in the end, we really don't spend much time actually at the villa. That we really just slept there and had breakfast. The rest of the day was spent at the beach and in town. There's usually one "villa gravity" day where you just want to relax at home. But you really can't go too wrong with probably 95% of the villas on the rental market. With that said, good luck villa hunting and don't let it make you crazy!
Thanks again! Hey BevM we are from the same town. Which airport do you usually fly from. Just trying to get an idea where the best deals usually are. We have two kids so a non-stop flight is better and I really do not like to fly. I use to drink but now that we have kids I take my flying pills and only drink a little just enought to relax.
