Another reason to like Canon
Another reason to like Canon
My 4+ year old Canon PowerShot A80 started to go on the fritz about a year ago at the end of our trip to the BVIs. After a few shots, the LCD screen would get these distorted images and purple streaks across it and it would record those distorted images. We have the underwater case for this camera and use it for snorkeling and as a second camera for my daughter to use. As it got more unreliable, I got her the nifty A590 to replace it.
About 2 weeks ago, I took one last look at the A80 with fresh batteries, clean media card, etc. and it happened again.
On a whim, I Googled the problem and discovered there was a Canon “Service Notice” on it – essentially a recall where, regardless of warranty status, Canon repairs, free of charge, the cameras exhibiting this malfunction, caused by the connecting parts of the internal wiring of the CCD becoming disconnected, especially if the affected products are stored or used in high-temperature and high-humidity environments (like on STJ or in an underwater case!). Canon also covered the cost of shipping and handling.
Got the camera back and its good as new, so wanted to give Canon a some well deserved props here.
There is also a blog devoted to helping guide you through this process and where folks were invited to comment. Turns out some of the recalled cameras couldn’t be fixed (replacement parts not available), and customers were sent refurbished or new models. Some folks were concerned because they had lotsa accessories for their defective camera and now couldn’t use them with the new model because they weren’t compatible.
But get this: in some cases, Canon replaced all the accessories! An example pasted below from that blog:
Based on the experiences of another commenter above, I wrote a polite email saying that I was happy to get a newer model but a bit disappointed about replacing the underwater case (which runs hundreds of dollars), in addition to a few other accessories (memory cards, extra battery) that I didn't mind so much about, and could they offer any assistance?
Well, the next morning I get a very courteous call from Canon customer support saying they'd replace all my Canon-branded accessories. Free shipping label, I sent everything back, and got replacements appropriate for the new model! I am so happy!
Kudos to you and to Canon, who were unfailingly polite and supportive. I loved my S230, I love the SD850, and I'm likely to continue with Canon cameras in the future.
Now, that’s customer service.

LOVE Canon. I am VERY rough on electronics (cracked iphone screen case in point) but that little powershot is virtually indestructible. LOVE IT. I keep my old one even though the lense cover doesn't cover the lens anymore - thank you to my 2 year old - as a back up. Luckily we'd taken it to STJ on our last trip even though we had the brand new Olympus underwater camera. Well it died on snorkel #1. That little beat up canon saved the day and most of my pics from that trip were taken with it.
It has sense been retired (though I keep it) and replaced with a new canon.
I am glad to hear they handled your issue so well.
