Grocery Prices Survey in the VI

Post by Gromit »

Since many of us rent villas, grocery prices are generally a consideration when planning a trip to STJ.

Prices can be totally random and you can end up paying alot more for the one at item at one store vs. another. The St. John Source recently reported on the regular survey of grocery prices on STJ and the VI...

The survey on St. John for the first time included Pine Peace, in addition to Dolphin and Starfish. Pine Peace had the lowest-priced food basket at $55.13, $1.76 cheaper than Starfish Market at $56.91and $5.60 cheaper than Dolphin Market at $60.73. All three stores were compared using a 24-item list.
The food basket survey is designed to inform consumers on which stores have the best prices on staple grocery items

Generally we make a hit to Starfish and Pine Peace markets at the start of a trip.

I can also report that Lilly's Market in the CocoLoba plaza out in Coral Bay has a very good selection and decent prices.
*Another fine scatterbrained production

Guess it just depends on what people buy. We thought Dolphin was cheaper this trip around. Compared...three come to mind now...Starfish, Organic 1/2 gallon milk was $7, same at Dolphin was $5. Vienna Sausages at Starfish were 1.29, Dolphin was .95 cents. Ham slices at Starfish over $5.00 and Dolphin was over $4.

Also stopped at Pine and don't remember what prices were...

We figure prices are what they are...we all have to eat. We know nothing is made on island and doesn't come here by osmosis. This location isn't cheap and we figure it's all worth it.

Just a note, don't forget to check expiration dates. If it should have one, and you can't find it, don't buy it.
