Staying at Mt. Leconte this weekend.

Post by hoosierdaddy »

Please be thinking of Hoosierdaddy and Hoosiermommy this Sunday night. We will be staying in a lodge at 6,500 feet with no electricity. Overnight temp in the 30's. My mind will definitley be on St. John.

HDaddy, S/O has hiked LeConte in October for the past 4 years and stays 3 days each time. He's taken brother, sis-in-law, son. He loves this trip and if you like the hike up, you'll enjoy the lodge and the meals!

Greyhoundmom - You should go with them once. I went three years ago with my two sons and it is a great experience. We went the first day they opened for the year (March 22). Hiked in 5 inches of snow and overnight temp was 14. They do have propane heaters. :D

nyestreet wrote:Sounds like fun. Do you hike to the lodge? Several years ago my son and I did a +/- 25 mile hut to hut trip in the White Mts w/ similar (lack of) amenities; it was a blast. Bring your binoculars maybe you can see SJ from the top.
Hiking is the only way to get there. The shortest route is 5 miles. It should be a nice way to spend some quality time.

How old is your son and where are the White Mts?

great memories

I love this area outside of Ashville, it's just beautiful any time of the year. Would love to do LeConte, but a little out of my league anymore!

Not so fast my friend. I'm not sure what your health status is but if you left at 9:00 and took your time with plenty of stops it would give you 8 hours to get there by 5:00. Age shouldn't make a difference. The oldest known person to make the hike 83 years old. What do you say, are you going to give it a try?

On the other hand, maybe hiking is the way to go. Last fall we took a weekend trip to the Smokies for a little flyfishing, I lasted all of 5 minutes before falling into the water, getting water inside the waders and I was done! Hanging around wet and waiting for my beloved spouse to finish is whole different story! Seriously, the older I get, the clumsier I am, I do not understand. (I was never what you consider graceful in the first place, but jeez!) I walk into walls and trip over my own (size 6) shoes all the time, stone cold sober. Maybe more rum is the answer.
