Meet Betty!
Well, I lived in Germany albeit for 8 years in the late sixties and early seventies and 1 year in England in the early '90's and never felt that Europeans didn't like Americans. Now I do know things have changed. I have also been back numerous times on business and never felt that someone didn't like me.
Europeans are a bit different in that they are more direct. They don't beat around the bush when talking with you. Just don't act the fool.
But don't let that stop you from enjoying some of the great cities of Europe and that includes one of the greatest in Florence.

We spent Spring break in Paris and Munich in 2006 with grand parents and kids. Not one rude incident the entire trip. It's like the islands, you get what you give. I was the only person that had ever been in France and folks were on guard due to the stories.
I was also in Amsterdam when the Iraq war started. There was an anti-US protest in the big square. Again, no rudeness. People differentiate between Americans and the acts of our government that they disagree with.
Europe? Any time. But, we prefer February and March when its less crowded and much cheaper.
Cheers, Rick

Thank you all
I find people abroad treat us kindly because we treat them kindly. My husband and I research the customs of a country before we travel there. Example in St John when you greet someone you say " Good
Day" before asking for something. Tourists that try to speak the language and follow customs goes a long way. My husband is abroad traveling about 16 weeks a year and the stories he could tell you about observing rude tourists! We have traveled all through Italy and we never encountered any rudeness by Italians, now the rudeness by Americans waiting in line at some of the museums and at the Vatican was appalling!
VaGirl... Venice is a must do! We also love the Lido!
Cypress .. I just wanted the ladies to know I am normal

Anthony - I have added your Italy link to my favorites and have saved the link for that place you recommended to stay.
La Scaletta was fine for us and not noisy at all. It was set back off the street. We would walk straight from the hotel over to the Ponte Vecchio and on over to the Piazza Della Signoria. We didn't really spend much time on near the hotel. We are always open to checking out new places though.
As for the Italians, they are AWESOME!!! I love them! They are so nice.
RickG, we usually go over Thanksgiving when it is less crowded and less expensive as well. Would love to go in February or March but the other half is a CPA and can't travel then because of his busy season. How is the weather in March? He may be retiring in the next couple of years.

Wha! I had STJ on the brain. The weather in March is rather like it is here in the DC area - moody. Last year we had warm days in Paris and snow in Munich. But, the only line we waited in was the Eiffel Tower and to see the Mona Lisa. Cool thing about the Mona Lisa, they had a section in front roped off for kids. My youngest got to go up there and she was the only one in there with about 300 adults jammed behind her.nothintolose wrote:Rick are you talking about the weather in Europe??? You go swimming there in March? I might be confused![]()

Had to chime in about Europe in March. We did actually go to the beach outside of Pisa one day in pants and a light weight shirt two years ago. The water was gorgeous and it was a very pretty day. The cliffs outside of Livorgno overlooking the water make for great pictures too. Like Rick said, the weather in March can be moody, but we've sure had good luck then. The French Riviera was gorgeous and not too busy also. It was definitely a difference in the people between France and Italy. The Italians were overly friendly, helpful and ready to attempt communication. The french basically just ignored us.
We chose between Italy and St. John for our trip this spring and St. John won!
