Brief report from our 3-Night Trip
Brief report from our 3-Night Trip
I usually do some long-winded, multi-part report, but I just started a new job and don't have the time. Nor does this trip really warrant any super long explanations. It was a short weekend, it was a blast, and yes, I'd do it again.
When: Thursday to Sunday, Easter Weekend
Where: Stayed at Cruz Views Unit 2
Who: Couple, in their early (last time I can say that) 30s.
How: Flew direct on Delta out of Atlanta. I'd recommend a weekend trip to anyone with access to a direct flight to STT.
Why: Most of you are thinking "why on earth would anyone torture themselves which such a short time in paradise?" It was that or nothing, my friends. Because of work conflicts, we had three nights, period.
Cruz Views: I actually loved staying at these condos. Since our time was so short, we opted not to rent a car and to base our beach visits around either taxis or water approaches. We would walk down and then when we wanted to go back, we'd catch a taxi from Dolphin. Total cost: $5 each time. We spent about $10 a day on taxis. The convenience of Cruz Views made up for the lack of luxe surroundings. It was all we really needed for the weekend, and for $125 a night over Easter, it simply couldn't be beat. No noise from Sirenusa and no road noise.
Sail Safari: We opted to get out on the water each day. On Friday, we booked an afternoon hobie cat sail with Sail Safaris. On this day (I later learned), there was a small craft advisory. Our captain called it "perfect sailing conditions." The day was gorgeous but windy, and the Pillsbury Sound was ridiculously churned up.
If you have never done this, don't mind getting close to the water and like a little rush, I would recommend it. It is a private charter experience for a relatively low cost. We went to Henley Cay for snorkeling (saw a nurse shark) and then to the back side of Lovango where we lounged on a private beach facing Congo Cay. Opened a couple of Red Stipes and enjoyed perfection. Then, we enjoyed an absolutely wild ride back.
Dinghy Rental: Noah's Little Arks, once again. They gave us a larger dinghy. We only booked it for a half-day, so we went to Waterlemon for a great snorkel (seas were a little choppy, but overall not unbearable) and then to Honeymoon for some beach time.
Meals were eaten at Deli Grotto, the Beach Bar or Ronnie's Pizza. We were super low maintenance on this trip and just what we wanted, when we felt like it with no set schedule. It was our third trip, and I have no doubt we'll return again soon, hopefully for a longer stay.

No - not a single donkey! To be fair, we really never left Cruz Bay except to go out on the water. The only beach on St. John we technically visited this trip was Honeymoon, and it was donkey-less. No mongoose either...
Oh, and another thing. We typically travel off-season because high-season pricing hurts my feelings. I've been to the Caribbean three times now in high season, once in January and twice in early April. I've visited many times in the summer months and twice in October.
I've decided early April is my favorite so far. I'd imagine March is nice as well. The water is a tad cool, but the air temperature is so amazing and the seas are great for sailing.
