First Time to Kauai Trip Report (Long)
Great job chicagoans
If we ever make it to the Hawian Islands its going to be Kauai. Sure looks to be beautiful hiking like St John only grander. Can you get to wherever ya want to buy renting a jeep, we want to be able to explore just like on St John. Air fare has always been the deal killer for us. Have to keep an eye out with the good airfares coming out.

For Laura T and anyone else who might be planning a trip to Kauai (or other Hawaiian island):
I like this site for the aerial resort photos:
http://www.wizardpub.com/kauai/kauaerials.html (there are similar pages for the other islands). It's nice to know a resort's proximity to the water (e.g., is it across a road or right on the beach?) and it also helps narrow down which building at the resort you might want to be in. Sometimes there's a big difference in view, road noise, etc. from one building to another.
Just click on the resort name and you can see the aerial photo.

Great report and pictures. And cool site that you posted. I tried it and the Sheraton in Poipu where we stayed in our honeymoon 1991 was still there. I remember that we had dinner at Kiahuna Plantation, where you stayed.
I would love to go back one day. Then I might dare to snorkel also, which I didn't back then. I blamed my contacts, but were actually too scared of the marine life
Now I would love to scuba dive there also.

Chicagoans...THANK YOU! We are booked to Kauai. We are spending 11 nights - going in September. While my husband agreed, I don't think he quiet realized he is going to miss 7 work days. He will likley complain bitterly in the weeks before we leave (he actually likes to work...strange man!). It will be worth it. And I couldn't see going all that way for less time. I did schedule it over Labor Day, so that will help!
I tell ya - it was your pictures and report that did it. Thank you again. I may PM you in the coming months to get your opinion on things. I love that website you recommended and I am all over Trip Advisor.
I guess no St. John this year...it's been a while...Well, we will need somewhere to go in 2010, too. Hope we are all employed so we can afford this...

Laura -- YAY!! I am so excited for you. PM me with any q's and let me know where you're staying. (I'm no expert, but I love talking about vacations, even if they're not mine.)
Now you can get yourself a book or two. We used the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook. Kauai Trailblazer is also highly recommended. (Many locals don't like the UKG because it mentions risky trails or trails across private property... but we skipped those anyway. In fact a post/question of mine on the Kauai TA forum about best books for newbies sparked a 6 page thread with enough rants that TA shut it down!)
Your husband will be so glad for the nice long trip. Of course, so will you!

We did a 15 day four Island Hawaii trip in 2005. I liked The Big Island best, but probably because my husband surprised me with a Vow Renewal on the beach at sunset for our 25th Anniv. The sea turtles were laying their eggs on the beach and it was just wonderful. We did the helicopter on Kauai and it rained the night before and the waterfalls were AMAZING. I wept with joy. It was a fantastic trip..
