Most Overrated / Most Underrated

Post by jmq »

We last did this topic in March 07 and it has received over 22,000 hits. Time to update.

The original post went like this:

“It is always interesting to me when folks almost sheepishly admit that THEIR experience with any of the iconic institutions or experiences of St. John did not live up to the hype for them or, maybe ain't what it used to be.

Makes me wonder how many don't speak up because they don't want to go against popular opinion. The caveat of course is that a mediocre anything in STJ is better than similar back in the real world.

Well, here is your chance to sound off. (No flaming allowed) For example, last year we finally hit the Miss Lucy Sunday brunch and were underwhelmed by the whole thing i.e. the "specials" that were anything but, the talent of the "jazz combo", etc.

Conversely, there are other things that maybe DON'T get the props they deserve, like Sun Dog Cafe in Mongoose Junction, who serve up consistently wonderful casual food and is great to combine with some shopping when we need a break from the midday sun. So good we hit it twice for lunch last year.

So what's your two cents ???”

Last time Skinnys took some big hits as “over-hyped” and other places like Tamarind Court were mentioned as “under-hyped”. Others spoke up about how much they like Trunk Bay.

That was then. What about now?

I find it quite hard to complain about much on STJ. If I had to pick one thing that most seem to love and I didn't was Uncle Joes BBQ. I thought it tasted okay, but the ribs were average at best. I love BBQ, and was so excited to have this due to the rave reviews....only to be let down.

I'm with Shoemak38... Hightide is under rated. it's not spectacular but it's good food, great service and the people watching (on/off ferry) is highly entertaining.

Under Rated:

Hightide- I've always had a good lunch here (see comments above).

Over Rated:

Columbo Smoothie Truck- too expensive, service was really grumpy.

Shipwreck Landing- Lunch was good (special pulled pork sandwich) but our dinner was nothing fancy and the steak was absolutely not worth the money- even with the STJ mark up. Other people really love this place so we keep trying it but I have yet to get it.

Overrated: Uncle Joe's. Yes, I said it. I don't like it. The sides are yummy, but I don't think their meat is good. Another vote for the Columbo Smoothie Stand. I don't think anything that have can beat the cocoberry shake from Paradise Cafe in Wharfside.

Underrated: Um...the cocoberry shake?

ScottB:
It's your own fault regarding your take on the ribs at Uncle Joe's BBQ
Ever since I made the ribs from the recipe you posted on this forum, it has ruined my tastebuds for ribs at any restaurant! My husband, who never cared for ribs, just devours them. They are always fall-off-the-bone tender & incredibly juicy. And the funniest part of all is how easy they are to make.
So, maybe that's the reason why you didn't think Uncle Joe's was all that.
Thanks for the recipe.

I'm no seasoned expert, but after two trips these are my observations-

Overrated: shopping in Charlotte Amalie - ugh, the crowds!
Underrated: the power of the sun and the snorkeling at Hawksnest

This might be cause for flame, but I'm feeling brave: we don't like the Beach Bar.

Hmmm.............
Overrated - I'll have to think about that :)
Underrated
a) Sheila's Pot
b) Buying fresh greens and produce direct from Josephines instead of at Starfish (for about 50% off their prices)

I know I'll be adding to my list (is that allowed :) )

over-rated:
Lime Inn
Smoothie Stand-put more booze in for goodness sakes!

underrated:
Sogos, especially the veggie plate
Candies
Beach Bar apps ( I know people like them, but they really are spectacular in my opinion)
"Sponges grow in the ocean...I wonder how much deeper it would be if that didn't happen."

I will echo one from that last round

Under Rated: Food at Tamarind. Great breakfast in a great location, guest chef's are almost always a homerun for dinner.

Over Rated: Hmm, I need to think about that
