Side trip recommendation

Post by deejayjay »

We will be making our 3rd trip in April. We have never been anywhere other than STT airport to Red Hook to STJ. Spent all our time on STJ which has been great. But, is there somewhere else we should venture out to. Most of the BVI places sound like bars. We do not drink, so don't particularly enjoy bars as destinations. We enjoy exploring the sights and snorkling. Not particularly fond of spending hours just sunning on the beach either. (Skin cancer. I'll be the one snorkling this year with long sleeves and pants.) The explorer in me says that we may be missing something by staying on STJ the entire time. Is there something that should go to the top of our list (day trip) to go see or do while in the islands?

Third vote for the Baths. Its a long day when you take the ferry over. But totally worth it.

If you wanted to do a day trip, you could go out with someone that could craft a great snorkel trip for you--someone that could take you to the Indians, for example. Or hire a boat with a captain to take you to some of the snorkel spots on St. John that are difficult and/or impossible to get to from land. I can't express how jealous I was when, after a long and sweaty hike/rock scramble out to Tektite, an Ocean Runner pulled up to the mooring ball and dropped people off. That's the way I'm going next time! :D

This is just my opinion, but I was not overly impressed with the Baths. It was a long boat ride out there, and well, it's a bunch of rocks. It's pretty, but I would not go again.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

I totally agree with you , liamsaunt. The Baths is OK. But having done it once, I don't need to go back.

We've chartered Ocean Runner and had them take us to snorkeling spots and made a day of it. One trip we actually hit 7 spots and we were snorkeled out by the end of the day. We've done trips in the USVI waters only and other times we've done the BVI hitting the Indians, some spots around Norman and Green and Sandy Cay as well a couple of spots round Tortola. It's a fun day on the water and worth the $$$.
