Cancelling villa reservation?
Cancelling villa reservation?
Hi all!
Hopefully my husband and I will be returning to St. John in June 2009. Our previous trip was for our 10th anniversary and we are loooooong overdue.
Unfortunately, I was diagosed with pancreatic cancer last year at age 49, which has a really high mortality rate. If I don't go into metastasis we'll be able to make the trip. If I do, then we won't.
Does anyone know what the usual cancellation policy is for villa-rental companies on St. John?
This is the most beautiful place I've ever been and I'm so excited to be coming back. Thanks so much! - Jill

First, I know we all send our thoughts and prayers to you as you meet this new challenge.......
I imagine that each villa company's policy is different..... buy travel insurance and you can put all your energy to focus on healing....... I think this web site has a company that many have used with good luck....maybe CSI...
Anthony...can you send her the link???
I have a good friend who beat the pancreatic cancer odds....be positive and gather the best possible medical team (both traditional and holistic) and friends and spiritual support system..and keep imaging yourself on the beach at STJ!!
Blessings!

Hi Jill! Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear of your health issues, but there are so many advances now that I have high hopes for your recovery. Look how well Patrick Swayze is doing!
Trip insurance is the way to go! I've never had to use it before, but I usually get it, and I highly recommend it. A forum member (FlaGeorge) and his wife (FlaSteph) had to cancel their trip because Steph had a cancer issue, too, and the trip insurance took care of everything for them. As to what villa companies do, I think it varies based on which company you are renting through, so you should probably drop your rental company an e-mail or give them a call to find out what their policies are.
Byado18 is right... keep envisioning St. John and we will all send good vibes. I truly believe a positive state of mind can help heal you.
All the best!

Jill - I'm not sure you can realistically get trip insurance for a pre-existing condition. For example, if you're pregnant when you book the trip, and then buy trip insurance and you have to cancel b/c something goes wrong with the pregnancy, my understanding is that trip insurance will NOT cover that. I'd think it would be the same for a cancer diagnosis. Insurance companies are in the business of accepting risk, but the odds are not stacked in the company's favor when it comes to something like pregnancy or cancer.
That being said, all of the villa rental agencies have different policies. I'd call around to some of the larger agencies, explain your situation and see what they say. Alternatively, you can just wait to plan your trip until a month or two before you plan to leave.
Best of luck to you. I hope you get to return to St. John in 2009 - it is a magical place!

Look to the left and you will see the ad for CSA insurance. They do offer coverage for pre-existing so you should not have any issues.
I believe that you can control your body (to some extent of course) with your attitude and your mindset. While you are undergoing your treatment, think soft sand, clear blue water, the warmth of the sun on your face and hear the soft breezes through the palm fronds.
My thoughts will be with you and I will say a prayer that you are on the beach in June and for many years to come.

Welcome to the board, and will send only positive thoughts coming your way.
When my sis was going thru her chemo and treatmens I had her listen to the nature sounds and think of yellow (sunlight) and the heat coming to the parts of your body that is aching and for calmness blue like the sea.
It is one of the visualization exercises we have used in the past with people who suffer from chronic pain and cancer.
Continue to think positive even when it is hard and believe me Jill it helps.
Also remember to breathe......inhale and exhale. Some are very surprised on how much breath can change the level of discomfort for the better.

First of all, my heart goes out to you for what you have to face. I wish you all the best and stay positive.
That said, my personal experience with trip insurance (and I'm sure all companies have their differences) was if there was a pre-existing condition, the trip insurance had to be purchased within two weeks of booking the trip. It was also a little more expensive. We went this route when my father-in-law had cancer. Have you already booked your trip?

Going "home" again October 26th!
Hi -
Thank you all so much for all the suggestions and positive thoughts!
Trip insurance is a great idea. I started looking into it and I can get pre-existing coverage. I'll have to check to see if there's a two week limitation. I haven't paid for anything yet, thank goodness, but will soon get airfare, villa and jeep rental and will get that covered.
Usually I've been feeling very positive since diagnosis. I've finished all possible treatments, am working out, doing reiki and enjoying my kids and husband. My dad died of pancreatic cancer 4 years ago, so I've seen the ugly side of it but, even then, I believe that there are no mistakes in this world.
St. John - here we come! Peace, Jill

Jill- prayers for you as you go through this episode. I would buy the 2009 St John calendar( available thru this forum and from St John Spice online) and each month you have St John to look at. I did not want to buy some generic islands calendar like they sell in all the bookstores. I wanted to look at the calendar and know it was St John I was looking at. Stay on this forum and we will help you thru this.
Jill, I can hear your positive attitude and I like it.
I would get trip insurance and be very up front with the villa rental agency about your condition. I would expect to get a 90% refund, or more, if the villa were re-rented. If I rebooked with the same management company I would expect to get a 100% credit. I would ask the specific question of the management company regarding cancellation in the context of your situation and file their response. If a problem arises you have your documentation and you can make certain that the policy is followed.
Cheers, RickG
