Tracy and Juice's Trip Report part 3

St. John Part 3
January 2007

Monday

Today we decided to hike into Salomon Bay and spend the day. We started up at the National Park Service sign at the top of the hill just past Estate Lindholm. We packed quite a few things, but the hike in wasn’t bad. The signs are pretty difficult to follow and some appear to be missing but we found our way. The beach was pretty busy and a bit windy. The air would give us the chills now and again. After lounging and taking in all there is to see, we decided to try and snorkel over to Honeymoon Beach. There wasn’t a lot to see on the snorkel, but we made it over and watched as many people in snorkel vests swam around. They were on a charter from St. Thomas. We headed back and enjoyed our packed lunch of PB & J’s – they always taste so good on the beach!

On the hike back up, we got lost a few times and reminded ourselves that we should have paid closer attention on the way down. We almost took the path to Cruz Bay but eventually found our way back to our car. It was much more difficult on the way back – we should have drank more of the beer in our cooler to lighten the load. What were we thinking!

Most of our day was spent at the beach, so once back at Rendezvous, we took a swim and relaxed by the pool.

We decided to stop by the Tap Room and get a Virgin Island’s Pale Ale. Unfortunately they were out so we chose another brand. There was one other person at the bar at the time and he just happened to be from Wisconsin and had been in Madison (where we live) on several occasions. We enjoyed our beer and then went to Morgan’s Mango for dinner. It was not busy at all and we were seated immediately without a reservation. Our meals were both delicious. I had coconut shrimp and Juice had the Cheeseburger in Paradise. After dinner, we were pretty tired from sitting at the beach all day, so we headed home and prepared for our next day.

Tuesday

We always enjoy the hike out to Waterlemon Cay and the snorkel proves to be one of the best each year. This year was no different. We usually walk around to the rocky shoreline so that the snorkel out and around the Cay isn’t too long. This time we decided to snorkel right from the beach. I highly recommend this. We snorkeled along the shoreline and saw all sorts of fish and coral and sea life. It is really quite amazing to take your time and actually look at all the life below the surface of the water.

We were able to see flounder, puffer fish, starfish, barracuda, and all sorts of other sea life. This is also where we spotted the lemon shark and why I am now calling this Waterlemon Shark Cay (for those of you who didn’t follow the shark thread posted previously)!

The beach was much more crowded after our lengthy snorkel and we were hungry. We always try to make it to Shipwreck Landing at least once for lunch during our week. We love the location, the view, and the food. Since we are so enamored with blackened mahi sandwiches and they are not on the menu, we ask if the chef would make them for us. This wasn’t a stretch, because they have grilled mahi sandwiches and blackened chicken sandwiches on the menu. They were happy to oblige and these were by far the best blackened mahi sandwiches of the entire trip. I am sure the raspberry colada didn’t hurt much either!

After our delicious lunch and a bit of shopping, we parked (illegally?) at Maho Bay and watched the waves roll in. I swam a bit while Juice read his book. It was a beautiful afternoon.

Dinner tonight was at the Banana Deck. We had only been once before and weren’t overly impressed so, we tried again. We both had fettucine alfredo, I had shrimp and Juice had chicken. It was delicious and the portions were very large. I must have had 10-12 large shrimp. The leftovers would be our lunch the next day. We enjoyed sitting out on their deck and would go back again.

Great photography.

We've hiked to Salomon from both the Lind Point Trail (the trail you took) and the trail from the Parks Headquarters in Cruz Bay. We much prefer the easier and lessing confusing trail from Cruz Bay.
