Two Months! Woo Hoo!

Post by Ron_L »

Barring any strange events, two months from now we'll be on STJ! Woo hoo!

We're flying into STT at about 2:00PM on Sunday, March 25th. It will be me (Ron... Doh!), My wife Amy, our 18 year old daughter Kristen and her best friend, also named Kristen (won't that be confusing? :) ). We're renting Moonsong villa near Hart Bay and we've arranged for a Jeep Liberty through Marcy at Cloud9 Villas (through C&C).

So far, we've decided on a couple of activities. We have reservations with Captain Phil aboard the Wayward Sailor for a full day sail on Tuesday. The girls all want to go parasailing, so we'll work that in one afternoon, probably coupled with shopping in Cruz Bay.

We also want to do one more activity, but we're undecided. I would love to do a day trip to the BVIs, but the cost of some of the day trips is making me hesitate. One of our other choices is to rent a boat and head to Jost or the Baths on our own. Our last choice is to rent a dinghy for a day. We'll include one of these three, but probably not two.

The rest of the days we plan on exploring the island and the various beaches.

For restaurants, we'll have to go to Skinny Legs, and we wan to try La Tapa since we love tapas. Otherwise, we'll play it by ear. My wife can't eat seafood (and we're going to an island  ) so we'll try to find places that have other options.

Any feedback or other suggestions would be great!

I'm pea green with envy. I have sooo long to wait until our next trip. You guys are going to have so much fun. I would definitely recommend a daytrip to the BVI's but don't right off doing the dinghy even if you decide to do the daytrip. It's really inexpensive and you can work it into a beach day. You can even do just 1/2 day if you want to. Lots of fun. Just be careful of the reef!

I'm almost as excited for you as I am for myself! Did you ever get a rash guard?

How about a trip to Jost via the ferry (to keep the cost down) and then a 1/2 day dingy rental, which is a lot of fun, for another day, time permitting. Have fun!!

We will be on island within a month so I share your excitment. We sailed with Captain Phil last year and really enjoyed the experience. He is a pro and loves the islands and his career.

What about kayaking or fishing? Arawak Expeditions offers both. My mom went out with them last year and had a great time. She was impressed with the guides knowledge.

I am kicking around the half day fishing trip for hubby and I. I think it is $275 for the boat and guide.

So excited for you guys, oh and you'll love Capt. Phil.

We did the boat rental thing for a day and loved it. We cleared Customs @West End then went to the Indians, Foxy's Taboo (the girls would love the bubbly pool), Sandy Cay, then White Bay. It was a great day. But taking the ferry over for a day is a good idea too.

Happy Planning!

Thanks, everyone... I'm going to try to catch up on a few things in one message, so I hope it isn't too confusing...

Chrisn... You're right. A 1/2 day dinghy rental isn't bad. We'll probably do it anyway. Any thoughts on renting the dinghy in Crua Bay vs. Coral Bay?

CG... No rashguard yet but I did find a place that has them up to size 5XL. I just have to find time to call them to see what is in stock. I'm also debating bringing snorkeling gear or renting on the island. I'd rather have our own, but I don't know if we'd use it enough to justify the purchase. There is a Scuba show coming up on Feb. 9 & 10 in Chicago so I'll probably go there and see what I can find.

b_as_u_r and Mia... Thanks for the suggestion and info on the ferry to Jost. Mia, I'm going to read the trip report next. That is a possibility.

PA Girl... Thanks for the info on Arawak Expeditions. I'd love to do some fishing, but I would be the only one! I'm thinking about it, but I'll probably use the money for a group activity instead  Have fun on your trip!

Jan... I'm interested in your DIY BVI excursion. Where did you rent the boat and did you use a captain? I'm very familiar with boats, but having someone who knows the area might be nice.

Whew! I think that's it... Sorry for the long message.

I had the same debate with myself. Two weekends ago we ended up going to a dive shop and spending a whole lot of money on good snorkel gear. And here's why: When we went to STT and went out on a charter snorkel trip, we used "rented" snorkels & fins. In the first place, even though I KNOW they sterilize the snorkels, it still grosses me out to put that thing in my mouth. In the 2nd place, the fins and mask were ill-fitting and the mask leaked and the fins wore blisters one every single one of my toes. This was on a Wednesday. We were there until Saturday. I couldn't go snorkeling or hardly even wear my sandals because of the blisters, which actually didn't heal until a week or so after I got home.

This time, I know my gear has my own spit on it and the mask fits properly and won't leak and I have booties and adjustable fins, so no blisters! The last thing I want is an unpleasant snorkeling experience in the perfect place, so I somewhat begrudgingly spent the big bucks to ensure an awesome vacation

Besides, now that I have all this expensive gear, I just may need another couple of trips to STJ to make it pay for itself, no? :D
