Re: AT&T Go Phone

While a sale always sounds good, be careful about which phone you buy. We've used the same AT&T Go Phone on St. John for the past three years. It's a Samsung SGH-a107, a very basic flip phone. We've never been happy with the audio quality of the phone, either being able to hear callers or caller...

Re: Casual Eats & a Sunset?

Don't forget Spyglass . . . good and affordable Happy Hour appetizers. It's in Wharfside Village, up the curved staircasase, above Joe's Rum Hut.

"Workation" on STX?

We're thinking of STX as an alternative to STJ. We typically spend a month at a condo overlooking Cruz Bay harbor. We stay close to town so we don't have to rent a car; we walk to the grocery store, restaurants, etc. and take taxis to the beaches. We work every day while on the island, and if the co...

Re: Cell Phone Service St John

Agree with the AT&T Go Phone recommendation. If you buy one, however, I suggest not going with the cheapest model, as I did. The audio quality of the flip phone we bought is sub par. AT&T service was not good in early January (apparently due to work on one of the STT towers), but it improved...

Re: How long could you stay?

We started with a couple of one-week stays on STJ, but for the last three years we've done one-month stays. No, we're not retired or rich. Here's how we do it. We use frequent flier miles, bring groceries that are expensive on STJ (cereal, coffee, etc.), stay within walking distance of Cruz Bay and ...

Re: Salomon Beach

If you don't want to lug beach chairs on the Lind Point Trail to Salomon/Honeymoon, don't forget you can rent a white plastic Adirondack chair from the Honeymoon Hut (north side of Honeymoon) for $5/day.

While supplies last.

Re: Salomon Beach

From the Visitor's Center to Salomon, figure a 30-40 minute walk on Lind Point Trail. My wife and I did it twice in January, each carrying a beach chair and a backpack. Not a tough trail, but I'd advise against sandals. Keens are perfect. I think a large cooler (that requires two people carrying it)...

Re: Verizon

This is great news, and I hope Verizon gets some towers in the USVI. We just returned from STJ and Verizon charges were an endless conversation topic among our group, all Verizon customers. Before we left, Verizon confirmed that we'd only be charged for voice calls and picture messaging. No charge f...

Re: Stuck in Red Hook?

Thanks for your reply, STJChica. Apparently there are no Red Hook accommodations within walking distance of the ferry dock. The closest ones are a short taxi ride away: - Ritz - Secret Harbor - Elysian - Cowpet - Sapphire - Sapphire Village - Crystal Cove - Wyndham Sugar Bay Fingers crossed that my ...

Didn't notice any fogging in Cruz Bay last night . . . was supposed to happen between 6 and 9PM.

Maybe tonight?

Stuck in Red Hook?

My wife arrives on a late flight into STT (10:20PM). Since she'll have no checked bags, she should be able to catch the last Red Hook-Cruz Bay ferry at midnight. If she misses it, is her best option to stay at a Red Hook hotel for the night (which?) or to hire a private taxi to Cruz Bay (which?). Th...

Re: Trip is almost here! how are swells and mosquitos?

Significant rainfall here yesterday (Saturday Jan 12).

Light rain off and on all day at Salomon, but got drenched walking back on the Lind Point trail yesterday afternoon.

Re: Skype on STJ?

Thanks for your replies on this. We'll give Skype a try on our upcoming STJ visit. Although the AT&T Go Phone seems to be the best way for Verizon customers like us to make voice calls on STJ, we hear an echo on the Go Phone, and our callers notice it, too. Even more noticeable when we try to us...

Skype on STJ?

Given that we are Verizon customers, we typically use an AT&T Go Phone for cell phone voice calls on STJ.

We're curious if anyone has used Skype to make voice calls on STJ -- laptop, tablet or smartphone -- and how well this works as an alternative to a cell phone call.

Thanks.

Re: AT&T Go Phone

JDW, We've used the AT&T Go Phone on our last two STJ visits. Yes, you will receive a number for the phone. Yes, you can receive calls . . . from anywhere. Yes, you can text with it. But you can text with your Verizon phone at no charge; it's those Verizon voice calls that add up . . . at $1.99 ...
