Re: New Years in St John
We were there two years ago for New Years. Everything was open and restaurants had their normal menus. My kids are the same ages as your little ones (only it was 2 years earlier so they were 7 and 4) so we didn't rage all night, but we did what most other people did - hang out on the beach by the Be...

Re: Buy beach chairs
I've bought beach chairs at the hardware store before. I think I donated it/them to someone on the board when we were done with them. That may be a good way to go....buy a set of beach chairs and then find someone on the board who lives in STJ and give the chairs to them with the caveat that you get...

Re: car rental suggestions
We have usually used O'Connor and have never had an issue. You can't count on using their office in town for parking (Not sure if that's even an option) but otherwise they've been very reliable. Once or twice the person there has been slightly brusque but more often they are friendly and helpful.

For the folks who bring lunch meat, do you freeze it beforehand or just keep it cold in the cooler?

Re: Oh, no! Out of Valley Doll sauce
Funny - when we took our extended family to STJ in 2011, My bro-in-law (who considers himself a hot sauce afficiando) found and fell in love with Woody's hot sauce. He bought a whole bunch from St John Spice and then it became unavailable (I think around the time Woodys was sold) and he couldn't get...

Ah man - that sucks. They were a perfect little niche spot. They were my go to iced coffee in the morning.
"Would you like Baileys in your iced coffee?"
Yes....yes I would.
sorry to see them go.

Re: Charter stop suggestions
on our last STJ day charter, we did a nice snorkel right by Ditleff Point. I guess its Klein Bay right there (or perhaps Rendevous - I never know the exact difference). It was pretty calm and we were the only boat there. Also, instead of Waterlemon which can be pretty crowded, we've done a snorkel m...

Re: NYE holiday on STJ?!
Thanks Crasherino. Good point on reservations, didn't really think about those this far in advance. Have to evaluate some dining options. We normally travel in November and/or May, but this year we have had some staffing changes at our business and the only full week we can travel is the xmas-nye w...

Re: Early AM layover in San Juan???
This is all good information. I am considering heading straight from Thanksgiving dinner to the airport to surprise my wife for her birthday. With child care and what not, I figured the best way to maximize our time would be to take the 11:59 through SJU. I thought that while the transfer sucks, at ...

Re: NYE holiday on STJ?!
JMO, but I would definitely plan on going out on NYE. The beach in Cruz Bay is very festive and fun. The Beach Bar had a band playing and everyone was hanging out - families with kids, adults, etc. As for it being crowded - that part is 100% true. We were on island from Xmas to New Year's this year ...

Re: Neat Sheet
Add me on to the parasheet admirers. We've gotten several of them (we now give them as gifts*) at the store in Mongoose Junction whose name escapes me. A little pricier than Amazon but if you're on island (or would rather spend your money there), its a great option. * Parasheets are v.2 of STJ gifts...

Damn. Hopefully - if this is actually enforced - they go with the $200 fine and not the year in prison.

Check out Copeland Charters. Capt Kevin is a good dude. He's just as happy taking you snorkeling and skipping the Bars. We stayed in the USVIs on our last trip and he took us to some nice spots.

Re: Snorkel Gear by the week?
Use Cruz Bay Watersports. They have the most inventory and are very convenient. Low Key is in town and - when busy - can run out of equipment as they give first priority to their dive/snorkel trips. I tried to rent from them over Christmas for my son and they didn't have any all week. Other people c...

Re: St John with a 5 and 7 year old, HELP!!!
I don't know if its available or not, but have you considered Grande Bay? We just stayed there with our 7.5 and 4.5 year olds and it worked out very nicely. The pool isn't huge but it is perfectly fine for the post-beach dip. And the 1 bdrm units were certainly big enough for the 4 of us.
