Re: Annaberg Sugar Mill Ruins.

There's usually an active bee hive high up on one of the walls, but they're not aggressive at all. Sandflies can be very bad late in the day,due to the neighboring ponds and wetlands.

Re: The road down past the Denis Bay monstrosity

It's very unlikely that the tax office is aware that the building there now isn't the same modest circa 1973 house there before.

Re: The road down past the Denis Bay monstrosity

The tax bill is so ridiculously low partly because we are still working with 1998 property assessments-- since the VI Government totally screwed up a re-assessment process about 10 years ago, and hasn't managed to remedy the situation. The National Park has had shamefully little interest their stewa...

Re: The road down past the Denis Bay monstrosity

Public works did not open the road, they allowed, (or maybe didn't) Ingrao to try to open the road and it failed miserably. Ingrao has had a sign at both ends saying it's closed to cars and pedestrians, which is illegal since it's a public right-of-way, if only on foot. Eagle Ray can drive down and ...

Re: The road down past the Denis Bay monstrosity

The road hasn't been passable by car since the late 1980s. The work Ingrao has been doing was ostensibly to fix and open up the road, but then exploded into an obvious excuse to increase the view from his new house. The new work collapsed totally in moderately heavy rain in May. It is likely that he...

Was that mystery creature maybe just a large chiton that was detached from its rock and curled up?

Re: Growling at Haulover North

Yep, that video does sound like wild boar--but it's the sound they make that's closest to deer grunting. Deer grunting has suddenly become a very common sound here, and I'd be willing to bet that's what you heard. http://www.myoan.net/huntingart/deer_calls.html Was very freaked-out myself the first ...

Re: Growling at Haulover North

Who would bring a bunch of wild boar? The same people who brought white-tail deer: people who liked to hunt. The boars have interbred with domestic pigs to varying degrees, but look pretty boar-ish still.

Re: Growling at Haulover North

Can not imagine that there was a boar at Haulover. It is totally not their habitat, and have never seen any sign of them east of Bordeaux. Johnny Horn trail on the north side. maybe, but not Haulover. I would vote for donkey or dog. Deer also make very odd noises...

Re: anyone ever come across this?

Oh, $$#@&, I keep trying too post on this, and getting far too long, so apparently my log-in runs out and I lose my post. I found it a little bit distressing that this memorial, to an a obviously super person, but one who never lived here, literally sets in stone the "Crazy lady" stori...

Re: Virgin Island (The Movie) 1959

This was based on Robb White's very un-cheesy book "Our Virgin Island", about Marina Cay, off the east end of Tortola. Worth watching for the super footage of Tortola, embarrassing to see Sidney Poitier as a "Yasssuh" bare-chested beefcake.

Re: Maho Bay sold December 27th

The only control the National Park might have is over development that extends into the water (docks, etc.), however, there would be major St John opposition to large-scale development that would certainly make it challenging to acquire all the necessary permits. There might be another outcome even ...

Re: Trip Report Nov 29 - Dec 8

Sorry to ruin a good story, but I don't think that's an instruction manual. Every Cape Air flight I've ever been on, the pilot will pull that book out, to confirm the proper approach vector or something--have flown with them extensively, on almost all their routes.
