I would think the difference comes from their native homes. Donkeys come from inland desert regions of North Africa, but horses evolved over a large area of the world, with modern horses originating in northern Europe/Asia, presumably with large bodies of water. Horses were common on St John decades...

Donkeys do not like swimming. Not one little bit.

Have only seen once on St John, in early January when the sun was setting as far south as it ever gets, so there was a clear horizon from where we were.

This is a portion of the huge Maho watershed and beachfront acreage that TPL acquired from various members of the Marsh family. The Park can only afford to pay TPL for a portion at a time as budgets allow. There are several parcels that were kept back from the sale to TPL, some are now on the market...

I'm pretty sure Cost-U-Less will be closed, since I've been thwarted in my shopping there by lesser holidays more than once. You can call them at 340-777-3545.
St John groceries will be open, probably most restaurants, etc.

It's about 4 miles from that KFC corner to Red Hook. Another note: Two building colors in town have changed. The fort is currently white, not red--they were working on a renovation and ran out of money years ago-and the legislature building across the street is no longer green but a pale yellow.

Call or email the Friends office and ask if they can help find a ride for you. They may well know who's going from Cruz Bay.

Those eggs in the car are actually pretty normal anywhere there are chickens and open car windows. Hens seek out protected, slightly elevated spots, and it probably doesn't hurt if the floorboards are warm. (The eggs would have been delicious, if you cooked them.) The NPS has been successfully trapp...

We who live here would be delighted if we had rain next week. What we've had for the last mont are showers, meaning about 40 seconds of light rain every 24 hours.
March is the driest month of the year, and there is only about a 2% chance of rain heavy enough to affect any plans.

Actually, I tend to assume a St Thomas cabbie will be rude and dishonest until it proves otherwise-a pleasant surprise is better than a vexing one. As a group, they have improved considerably over the years.

Regarding the location, it's in upper Pastory, just on the south side of the Caneel HIll ridge. The nearby construction does not appear to be completed quite yet, there is an enormous multi-pod villa going in.

Just to keep it clear that we are not talking about big Maho, where the road runs along the beach (that land has some ownership situations of its own), but Little Maho, the present campground land only. The owners have never lived on St John, and bought it post-Park, but during the many years that t...

I mostly disagree with Xislandgirl. Other islands you've been to in the Caribbean have laws that compel hiring of long-term residents/belongers, which is of course not the case here. Almost all restaurants on St John are owned by people from elsewhere, and they prefer to hire people who look and spe...
