Re: Today's car barge update. It's not pretty.

I guess the only people happy with this situation are the rental car companies on St. John. :D With all the uncertainty about the car barges we'll take the people ferry or a private water taxi. I would not do well waiting 4+ hours in line. I wonder how many people are missing flights because of this?

New Hansen Bay parking - good or bad?

New parking for Hansen Bay just past Vie's. I know the good is better access to HB when Vie's is closed but when they are both open is it going to end up like Lameshur, Maho, Kiddle, et al where the beach is really crowded. Everyone should enjoy all the great beaches on St. John but I miss times whe...

Re: When and/or was your 1st Time on STJ

May 1998. Delta arrived at dark then. Our taxi driver from the airport was driving like crazy to get us to Red Hook in time to catch the last ferry. The safari taxi from Cruz Bay to Maho Bay camps was very scary. We arrived at Maho and were met by "security", a guy with dreadlocks to his w...

Re: June vs April Travel

We've been in April & early May once each. Been in June many times. Our experience was that weather was slightly warmer (not much difference) but the water was calmer and better for snorkeling. June use to be "off season" but not anymore. With more families coming after school ends Jun...

Re: Photos

Hi all, I just edited my post re outpr last trip, "951days...", to remove the link to my photos. Today, a local island business used one of my photos in a tweet. I consider this advertising and I did not give permission for my photo to be used. My mistake for not watermarking my photos. I...

Re: 05/25 - 06/03 Mini Trip Report

As long as the sea is calm, Carvel is a great snorkel spot and even better dive site! Twenty-two years going to St. John; that's a lot of great memories! Dave We do have a lot of great memories and hope to make many more. I dove Carvel once and it was fantastic. We got lucky with the seas two weeks...

Re: 05/25 - 06/03 Mini Trip Report

Thanks for the trip report. We always like hearing about other people's snorkel experiences. Can you say more about Carvel Rock and Henley Cay? We've never snorkeled those spots. Which charter boat were you on to get out there? The charters we've been on that go out of Cruz Bay always go to Little ...

05/25 - 06/03 Mini Trip Report

Arrived at 1:00 for trip 22 and used Amalie Car Rental for the first time. It was a little quicker than Discount Car rental and Amy was very nice to deal with. I’m not sure the extra $$ was worth it though – the jury’s still out on that one. I also arranged with Meredith at St. John Provisions to st...

Just got back from there this morning. The snorkeling is better at Hawksnest vs. Gibney/Oppenheimer/2 Butt - IMHO.

Re: Thoughts on a two week stay off season, one villa or two

We've moved once and would never do it again. As you can see you will get 1/2 the crowd saying don't split the time and the other 1/2 saying split the time. None of us know what you and your group prefer. We can only share our experiences and mine sucked. :D If you end up hating staying in one place...

Re: Car rental companies demanding letter from insurance com

I think some people are missing the point because perhaps you actually read all contracts and fine print (like one kinda should but really who does that!) and also perhaps you are lucky enough to have discretionary income such that the surprise fee of their required insurance is a non-issue. I'm lu...

Re: Car rental companies demanding letter from insurance com

I have to disagree with this being a money maker. If they truly wanted to make money they would wish for a wreck and then take advantages of the gaps in coverage between what they require and what your CC Company of insurance company pays. I have been in this insurance business for 20+ years and I A...
